The

Uniqueness
of Christ

an ebook by
TO N Y E VA N S
Regardless of your religious beliefs, the significance
of Jesus Christ in history cannot be denied. Two
of the major holidays celebrated around the world,
Christmas and Easter, have Christ as their focal
point. The world’s calendar system functions on a
structure developed around the birth of Jesus. He
has touched aspects of law, philosophy, culture,
language and art—and continues to do so to this
day. Jesus Christ, His ministry and His legacy all
serve as a testament of what happens when God
decides to declare His greatness in human history.

What makes Christ so unique from all other

people? His teachings have impacted the world,
even across religious barriers. The miracles
He performed amaze us to this day. But these
things, in and of themselves, are not what makes
the person of Christ separate from the rest of
humanity.

His uniqueness is simply this: He is God-perfect

in all His ways. He was made flesh and came to
earth to solve the problem of human sin. He
was unjustly crucified by those He came to save,
but He rose from the dead and will return one
day to usher in His glorious kingdom. No other
person in all of Creation past, present or future
measures up to that!
On one occasion, Jesus’ disciples voiced the
question that people have been asking about
Him for two thousand years. Having witnessed
His miraculous calming of the sea, the Twelve
looked at one another and asked in amazement,
“What kind of a man is this?” (Matthew 8:27).

The Gospels and the rest of the New Testament

were written to answer that all-important
question and explain its implication for our
lives.

The two natures of Jesus Christ form what

theologians call the “hypostatic union.” Put
simply, it means that Jesus is fully man and fully
God at the same time.
In other words, Jesus was no less God when He
became a perfect man. He was fully human, but
without sin. He is the God-man, not sometimes
God and sometimes man. He is one person with
two natures.

For this reason, He is set apart from all other

persons in history as truly unique. This is what
the apostle Paul has to say about our Lord:
“Have this attitude in yourselves which was
also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed
in the form of God, did not regard equality
with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied
Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and
being made in the likeness of men. Being found
in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself
by becoming obedient to the point of death,
even death on a cross. For this reason also, God
highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the
name which is above every name, so that at the
name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who
are in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and that every tongue will confess that Jesus
Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
(Philippians 2:5-11)

Christ was absolutely unique from all others,

yet He chose to “empty Himself” and become
just like us. He was entitled to be equal with
God because that’s who He was. Yet He chose
to lower Himself so that we might see the
greatness in lowliness. In Matthew 20:26, Jesus
says, “Whoever wishes to become great among
you shall be your servant,” and earlier in verse
16, He says, “So the last shall be first, and the
first last.”

So what can we gain from knowledge of Christ’s

uniqueness? He calls us to be holy to Him, as
He himself is holy (Leviticus 20:26).

Christ’s ultimate demonstration of His holiness

was in His willingness to empty Himself. In the
same way that God was willing to lower Himself
and become a man, so we should be willing to
lower ourselves as willing servants of all.
So in this world of equal rights and entitlement,
take a moment today and contemplate what it
might look like to empty yourself before others.
In the spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ, let’s strive
to be unique among others by placing the best
interests of others ahead of our own.

Detours: The Unpredictable

Path to Your Destiny

God has a plan for your life.

More often than not, it’s a

detour, one that can leave you
feeling temporarily stalled
and slowed down. Which nobody likes. But detours
are necessary if any improvements are going to be
made on the paths we travel. Or if any wreck is going
to be cleaned up or a hazard avoided. Detours are
designed for our own good, regardless of how we
view or feel about them.

Detours are a good thing that often feels bad.

What is the purpose of a detour?

Tony knows a thing or two about detours, and one

of the things he knows for certain is that God works
through detours to bring about His blessing. To
deliver you to the place He has created just for you.
Kingdom Prayer
Prayer is the single most
misunderstood and neglected
aspect of the Christian life. It
has been estimated that most
Christians pray three to five
minutes a day. Compare that to the time many
spend complaining, and you’ll gain insight into
the spiritual and emotional condition of our day.

Yet God has constructed the world in such a way

that there is much He won’t do in a Christian’s life
apart from prayer. Prayer, when combined with
faith, can accomplish great things.

In this practical and comprehensive overview

of prayer, Tony Evans covers a variety of
topics, including:

Principles of productive prayer

The power of prayer and praise
Fasting and prayer
Prayer and God’s purposes

Tony’s expositions of various passages on prayer

will help you realize its critical importance and
encourage you to make it a dominant mark of
your life.
