DAY Reading Words with Silent Letters: k, w


Read aloud the focus statement. Then point to the first example and say: This word is knot. Say knot. (knot)
1 Do you hear /k/ at the beginning of knot? (no) What sound do you hear? (/n/) Repeat the process for write.
Then read the directions and call students’ attention to number 1. Say: Point to the knife. Say knife. (knife)
Now run your finger under the word as we read it together: knife. Do you hear the /k/ sound in knife? (no) The
letter k is crossed out to show that it is silent. Repeat the process with the remaining pictures.
Dictation Direct students’ attention to the bottom of the page and say:
Listen to each word I say. Then write the word you hear. 1. wrap (as in to wrap a gift) 2. knife

DAY Reading Words with Silent Letters: l, b


Read aloud the focus statement. Then point to the first example and say: This is the word calf. Say calf.
2 (calf) Do you hear /l/ in /k ă f/? (no) What sound do you hear at the end? (/f/) Repeat the process for comb.
Then read the directions and call students’ attention to number 1. Say: Point to the lamb. Say lamb. (lamb)
Now run your finger under the word as we read it together: lamb. Do you hear the sound of the letter b in lamb?
(no) The letter b is crossed out to show that it is silent. Repeat the process with the remaining pictures.
Dictation Direct students’ attention to the bottom of the page and say:
Listen to each word I say. Then write the word you hear. 1. thumb 2. half

DAY Writing Words with Silent Letters: k, w, l, b


Read the directions and call students’ attention to the word box. Say: Point to the first word. It says lamb.
3 Run your finger under the letters and read it with me: lamb. Which letter is silent in lamb? (b) Write the word
on the line in the box that says silent b. Repeat the process for the remaining words.
Dictation Direct students’ attention to the bottom of the page and say:
Listen to this sentence. Then write it on the line: Did you knock your wrist?

Read the directions and call students’ attention to phrase number 1. Say: Let’s read number 1 together:

for the remaining phrases.
