Around the two large masses, there are five positions in space where the gravitational pull of
the two large masses like the Sun and the Earth precisely equals the centripetal force required
for a small object like a satellite/observatory to move with them. This mathematical problem,
known as the “General Three Body problem” was discovered by an Italian Mathematician
Josephy-Louis Lagrange in his prize-winning paper (Essai sur le problème des trois Corps,
1772). To honor his discovery, these five points L1 L2, L3, L4 and L5, were named after him
and are known as “Lagrange Points”.
The first three Lagrange points L1 L2 and L3 are unstable and were discovered by the Swiss
Mathematician Leonhard Euler and the remaining two L4 and L5 are more stable and were
discovered by the Lagrange in 1772.
L1 L2and L3 lie along the line connecting the two large masses like Sun (S) and the Earth (E).
while L and L each act as the third vertex of the two equilateral triangles formed with the
4 5
centers of the two large bodies (Sun and the Earth) as the remaining two vertices of the
triangle.
