What’s New

Directions: Read carefully the excerpt of an essay below and answer the questions
that follow.

Learning is a constant thing in life and change is the impact of learning. In

everything we do, there is always something to be learned that awaits in the end. By
that learning, we keep our perspective or make a new one, thus we change. As long as
we live, we never cease to learn every single day. Every day‘s struggles and challenges
are great opportunities for an individual to learn new things. The same is true with an
organization. For an organization to prosper in the business or endure the demands of
the competition in the field where it belongs, profit or non-profit, it has to have a
learning organization to achieve its goals. Every time the organization faces a certain
problem, its organizational head tries to develop an intervention to solve the problem,
thus, this becomes an opportunity for an organization to learn whether to utilize the
same intervention or not if the same problem arises as far as effectiveness is
concerned.
Change is permanent and inevitable. There is really a need to embrace this
change. Most importantly, this is more vital when this change brings improvement or
progress. The recent pandemic that struck everyone teaches us how to be resilient and
adaptive to the demands of the time specifically difficult times like today.
Most governments around the world opted to have the suspension or closure of
the schools for the safety of the children brought by the emergence and threat of the
Corona Virus Disease of 2019. This pandemic has brought a huge adjustment on how
schools should continually deliver learning without the traditional face to face
interaction or the classroom set-up.
DepEd Secretary Leonor M. Briones, on the other hand, said that DepEd is
conducting a nationwide consultation with stakeholders and education experts.
Currently, DepEd is preparing a Learning Continuity Plan on ―how to deliver
education to learners and to prepare in case the opening of classes gets pushed
back.‖

4
DepEd Undersecretary and Spokesperson Annalyn Sevilla explained that the
COVID-19 situation will definitely usher in a ―new normal in the education
system.‖ Thus, DepEd has to prepare to adjust to the changes in the educati on
environment to ensure learning will not be further disrupted.
For instance, Sevilla said that schools may no longer be allowed to practice
previously-prescribed student-teacher ratio since social distancing would still be
encouraged. ―We cannot have over 50 students in one classroom,‖ she explained in
Filipino. To address this, DepEd is looking into the possibility of alternating school
days for students or staggered conduct of classes—among other feasible
interventions.
What was considered as ―minority‖ before, Sevilla said may become the new
normal amid the COVID-19 situation. ―Before, there was a small percentage of
learners who subscribe to online learning or homeschooling compared to formal
schooling but with the current situation, this may be reversed,‖ she added.
Even before the outbreak, Sevilla said DepEd has existing interventions to
be used for education in emergencies. ―We have alternative delivery modes (ADMs)
which we have been using for learners who miss out on school due to natural
calamities and others,‖ she said.
The New Normal scenario gives birth to the educational contingency plan to be
utilized by different academes in private or government sector. The educational
contingency plan names the following Learning Delivery Modalities:
 Print Modular Distance Learning Modality
 Digital Modular Distance Learning Modality
 Online Distance Learning Modality with two types:
 Synchronous Online and Asynchronous Online
 Radio and/or Television based Modality

There are three prevailing modalities mostly adapted by the schools today.
Among these are Print Modular Distance Learning Modality, Digital Modular Distance
Learning Modality and Online Distance Learning Modality based on the survey
conducted.

Answer the questions briefly:

1. What is the essay all about?
2. Which learning modality/ies adapted by your school?
3. What can you say about this change in the new educational set-up?
4. Do you agree with the statement that change in the educational system
is inevitable? Why or why not?
5. Can you cite some changes in the previous learning modality and
current modalities? Prove your claim.

DAY 2

Types of Claims in Expository Writing

Expository writing is like persuasive writing. Its purpose is to explain a certain topic
or issue. Sometimes, it expresses assertions of the writer thus persuades the readers
on what he or she is asserting about. When you express your opinion and turn a topic

5
into a claim, you are definitely trying to persuade someone to believe. Claim is the
position of the writer on what he or she believes about a certain topic or issue.
Types of Claims in Expository Writing:

 Definitional Claims- are claims over the denotation or classification of what

something is. This is sometimes called the classification claims.

For example, you are trying to convince that a therapeutic massage is

often performed on nude clients; however, it is not a form of prostitution.
You must check the legal definition of prostitution where therapeutic
massage does not fall in this classification.

 Factual Claims- set out to argue the truth and falsity of an assertion.
Assertion refers to a strong or firm declaration of something that you believe in.
Usually, they are very simple to answer for there are facts supporting this type
of claim as suggested by its name.

For examples:
1. President Rodrigo Duterte is the oldest candidate for the
presidency.
2. Barrack Obama is the first African American President.
3. Nelson Mandela is the first African President of South Africa.

Though factual claims are simple to answer, there are times that they may not
be answered absolutely. This happens when we consider the relativeness of a
topic to morality, culture, or religion. There is a very thin line between the truth
and falsity of a certain topic and the final answer is yet to be discovered.

For instance, God’s law is above the law of the land.

What’s In

Directions: Answer the questions based on the given pictures below.

Ebooks or Thick Paper Back books? Why?

Image 4 Image 5

What’s New
Directions: Read carefully the essay and answer the questions that follow.

As online learning becomes more common, more and more resources are
converted to digital form, some people have suggested that public libraries should be
shut down and, in their place, everyone should be given an iPad with an e-reader
subscription.

Proponents of this idea state that it will save local cities and towns money
because libraries are expensive to maintain. They also believe it will encourage more
people to read because they won‘t have to travel to a library to get a book; they can
simply click on what they want to read and read it from wherever they are. They could
also access more materials because libraries won‘t have to buy physical copies of
books; they can simply rent out as many digital copies as they need.

8
However, it would be a serious mistake to replace libraries with tablets. First,
digital books and resources are associated with less learning and more problems than
print resources. A study done on tablet vs book reading found that people read 20-
30% slower on tablets, retain 20% less information, and understand 10% less of what
they read compared to people who read the same information in print. Additionally,
staring too long at a screen has been shown to cause numerous health problems,
including blurred vision, dizziness, dry eyes, headaches, and eye strain, at much
higher instances than reading print does. People who use tablets and mobile devices
excessively also have a higher incidence of more serious health issues such as
fibromyalgia, shoulder and back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and muscle strain. I
know that whenever I read from my e-reader for too long, my eyes begin to feel tired
and my neck hurts. We should not add to these problems by giving people, especially
young people, more reasons to look at screens.

Second, it is incredibly narrow-minded to assume that the only service libraries

offer is book lending. Libraries have a multitude of benefits, and many are only
available if the library has a physical location. Some of these benefits include acting as
a quiet study space, giving people a way to converse with their neighbors, holding
classes on a variety of topics, providing jobs, answering patron questions, and keeping
the community connected. One neighborhood found that, after a local library
instituted community events such as play times for toddlers and parents, job fairs for
teenagers, and meeting spaces for senior citizens, over a third of residents reported
feeling more connected to their community. Similarly, a Pew survey conducted in 2015
found that nearly two-thirds of American adults feel that closing their local library
would have a major impact on their community. People see libraries as a way to
connect with others and get their questions answered, benefits tablets can‘t offer
nearly as well or as easily.

While replacing libraries with tablets may seem like a simple solution, it would
encourage people to spend even more time looking at digital screens, despite the
myriad issues surrounding them. It would also end access to many of the benefits of
libraries that people have come to rely on. In many areas, libraries are such an
important part of the community network that they could never be replaced by a
simple object.

Answer the questions briefly:

1. What issue is raised in this essay?
2. What is the writer‘s stand about the issue?
3. What are his supporting statements presented?
4. Do you agree with the writer‘s stand? Why or why not?

5. Should you propose an action, what specific action will you do to

respond to this issue?

9
Types of Claims in Argumentative Writing
Argumentative writing is a type of persuasive writing. Similar to expository
writing, its purpose is to persuade the readers. Moreover, it persuades readers
to take a certain course of action as an impact to reading an argumentative
essay.
Your claim in an argumentative essay is termed as thesis that can be found in
the thesis statement.
Claims vary as FACT, POLICY, and VALUE.

 Claims of Fact
In argumentative writing, you need to consider an argument. You have to
make sure that your claim is something debatable yet based on facts.
Examples:
1. Whether or not grades really measure academic achievement
2. Whether or not libraries are still effective in the digital age

 Claims of Policy

Like the other one mentioned earlier, you have to start with an
argument. This time your claim should state that something be
implemented or not. The keyword to unlock this claim is the use of the
word ‗‘ SHOULD‘‘.

Examples:
1. Children in low-income families should be given medical insurance
from the government.
2. Children in low-income families should be supported by the local
government in availing online class in this time of pandemic.

 Claims of Value
One very important element in writing argumentation is the argument
itself. Claims of value suggest the worth of an idea or practice.
Sometimes, they suggest that some things are morally right or wrong.

Examples:
1. The Earth is too beautiful to lose over global warming.
2. Ebooks are better to read than the paper thick back books.
