Mandaya

Origin:
- The history of the Mandaya Tribe is marked by their resistance against Spanish colonization and Muslim
raids. Despite facing numerous challenges, they have managed to preserve their cultural identity and
maintain their ancestral lands. In more recent times, the Mandaya Tribe has encountered modern
influences, such as Christianization and resettlement policies, which have brought changes to their way
of life. (Michael Camus, 2023)

Where sila Makita:

Davao del Norte, Compostela Valley province, Agusan del Sur, at Davao Oriental.

 “Dagmay” is a handwoven textile made from abaca. Making it involves a mud-dyeing technique
wherein tribe members soak their tannin-dyed yarns into iron-rich mud for days. The Mandaya
women then weave the fiber into intricate figures and patterns depicting their folklores and
beliefs.
 “Weaving is not just an art form for us; it is a way of life. It connects us to our ancestors and
allows us to pass down our knowledge and stories to future generations,” says Datu Bay-ot, a
respected elder of the Mandaya Tribe.

- Religion
Deities (Davao Oriental):
There is a tri-pod of the faith of the Mandayas: God (called the Tagallang, Magbabaya, Mansilatan), Nature,
and Man.

The Mandayas believe on God and has a deep respect to nature especially the land. The land is sacred and holy.
Man will die but the land remains. In principle, the Mandaya believes that land is not to be owned because man
is only a steward. The Mandaya has high regards to women proven by the role of the balyans (dancing
priestess) and the catalunans (singing priestess) in the community.
