Title (Topic): Measures of Position for Grouped Data: Percentiles for Grouped Data
Competencie/s: Calculates a specified measure of position (e.g. 90th percentile) of a set of data.

I. CONTENTS
The percentile of grouped data is used to characterize values according to the percentage below them.
Early on, you have already learned that kth quartile denoted by Qk, and the kth decile denoted by Dk are
computed, respectively

−  −
Qk = LB + 4

i Dk = LB + 10
i

Finding percentiles of a grouped data is similar to that of finding quartiles and deciles of a grouped data.
The kth percentile, denoted by Pk, is computed as follows:

−
Pk = LB + 100

i

where:
LB = lower boundary of the Pk class
N = total frequency
cfb = cumulative frequency of the class before the Pk class
fPk = frequency of the class
i = size of class interval
k = nth percentile, where n=1, 2, 3, 4,…, and 99

Illustrative Example:
Calculate the 65th percentile of the given frequency distribution below.

CLASS INTERVAL FREQUENCY

46-50 4
41-45 8
36-40 11
31-35 9
26-30 12
21-25 6
Solution:
Class Frequency Lower Less than
Interval (f) Boundaries Cumulative
Scores (LB) Frequency
(< cf)
46-50 4 45.5 50
41-45 8 40.5 46
36-40 11 35.5 38 P65 class
31-35 9 30.5 27
26-30 12 25.5 18
21-25 6 20.5 6
N=50
65 65(50) 3, 250
P65 class: 100
= 100
= 100
= 32.5

EXPLANATION:

STEPS ILLUSTRATION
1. Find the position of the P65 class. 65 65(50) 3, 250
Position of P65 class = 100 = 100 = 100 = 32.5

2. Then, look for the class interval where 32.5th value belongs to 28th -38th value.
35th value belongs. 36-40 is the P65 class.
3. LB is the lower boundary of the P65 class. LB= 35.5
4. cfb is the less than cumulative frequency cfb=27
below the P65 class.
5. fPk is the frequency of the P65 class. fP65=11
6. i is the size of class interval. Count the i=5
values from a class interval.
7. Substitute the values in the formula and 7
−
get the final answer. Pk = LB + 100

i

65(50)
− 27
P65 = 35.5 + 100
11
5

3, 250
− 27
P65 = 35.5 + 100
11
5

32.5− 27
P65 = 35.5 + 11
5

5.5
P65 = 35.5 + 11
5

P65=38
ASSESSMENT:

Problem: Calculate the P25 and P50 of the given data below.

The owner of a coffee shop recorded the number of customers who came into his café each hour in a day.
HOURS FREQUENCY
26-30 3
21-25 4
16-20 6
11-15 5
6-10 10
1-5 2
