Longalian theory on the sublime , outlined in his treatise “On The
Sublime”, emphasizes the power of language to evoke awe and
wonder.

awe and overwhelming granduers that transcends the ordinary.
• EMOTIONAL RESPONSE

often characterized by fear, admiration, and a sense of the infinite.
• NATURE AND THE SUBLIME
Longinus viewed nature as a key source of the sublime,
particularly the vastness of the natural world and its awe-
inspiring phenomena.
EMILY BRONTE’S USE OF LANDSCAPE IN
WUTHERING HEIGHTS.
Bronte’s masterfully uses landscape to create a sense of
wildness and untamed beauty, evoking a sense of both wonder
and terror in her readers.
• THE MOORS
The vast, windswept moors serve as a backdrop for the novel’s
dramatic events. They smbolize the untamed nature of the
characters and the wildness of thier passions.
• WUTHERING HEIGHTS
The imposing , gothic mansion of Wuthering Heights is set
admist the moors , reflectings the turbulent and unpredictable
nature of the characters who inhabit it.
• THRUSHCROSS GRANGE
Thrushcross Grange , a more refined and genteel residence,
stands in contrast to wuthering heights, representing a more
civilized and orderly world.
THE SUBLIME IN WUTHERING HEIGHTS
Bronte’s use of landscape , particularly the moors , is
deeply interwined with the concept of the sublime.
• AWE-INSPIRING VASTNESS
The moors are vast and unforgiving, inspiring a sense of
awe and wonder in the characters and readers.
• UNPREDICTABILITY AND DANGER
The weather on the moors is unpredictable and often
violent, reflecting the emotional turmoil and danger of
the characters’ lives.
• CONNECTIONS TO NATURE.
The characters are deeply connected to the natural worl
d , both in their love for it and their fear of its power.
CONCLUSION
Bronte’s use of the sublime in wuthering heights is a
testament to the power of nature to inspire awe , fear , and
a sense of the infinite.
The novel’s enduring appeal is partly due to the vivid
depicton of the moors, which creates a lasting impression
on the readers.
The sublime nature in wuthering heights reinforces the
novel’s exploration of themes such as passion, revenge,
and the enduring power of the human spirits.
