CLASS : VI
SUBJECT : SCIENCE
CHAPTER -10 (FUN WITH MAGNETS)
) sheep.
NAME :____________________ ROLL NO :_________ DATE : OCT-2024

KEYWORD:
1. Compass: An instrument used for finding direction, with a needle that always points
towards north.
2. Magnet: A magnet is a metallic object which attracts iron or magnetic things.
3. Magnetite: It is an ore of iron which has magnetic properties.
4. North pole: When a magnet suspended freely, one pole of the magnet always points
towards north. This is known as north-pole.
5. South pole: When a magnet suspended freely, the end of a magnet points towards
south. This is known as south-pole.
6. Magnetic field- The area around a magnet where its strength can be felt.
7. Magnetic force- The force with which a magnet attracts an object.

NCERT Q/A:
1. Fill in the blanks in the following:
i. Artificial magnets are made in different shapes such as ----, ------, and --------.
Ans: bar, horseshoe, and cylindrical.
ii. The materials which are attracted towards a magnet are called -------------.
Ans: magnetic materials.
iii. Paper is not a ---------- material.
Ans: magnetic
iv. In the olden days, sailors used to find direction by suspending a piece of ---------.
Ans: magnet.
v. A Magnet always has ---------- poles.
Ans: two
2. State whether the following statements is True or False:
i. A cylindrical magnet has only one pole.
Ans: False, magnet has two poles: a north pole and a south pole.
ii. Artificial magnets were discovered in Greece.
Ans: False
iii. Similar poles of a magnet repel each other.
Ans: True, magnets with similar poles repel one another.
iv. Maximum iron filings stick in the middle of a bar magnet when it is brought near
them.
Ans: False, because the magnetic strength of a magnet is greatest at the ends, thus most iron
filings attach to the magnet's two ends.
v. Bar magnets always point towards the North-South direction.
Ans: True
vi. A compass can be used to find the East-West direction in any place.
Ans: True
vii. Rubber is a magnetic material.
Ans: False, a magnet does not attract rubber. Hence, it isn't a magnetic substance.

3. It is observed that a pencil sharpener gets attracted by both the poles of a magnet although its
body is made of plastic. Name the material that might have been used to make some part of it.
Ans: The material is iron, with the help of an iron blade present in the sharpener, it gets attracted to
the magnet.

4. Column I shows different positions in which one pole of a magnet is placed near that of the
other. Column II indicates the resulting action between them for each situation. Fill in the Blanks.

5. Write any two properties of a magnet.

Ans: Two properties of magnet are:
i. Attracts magnetic material such as iron, nickel, and cobalt based objects.
ii. Points in the direction of north-south.
iii. Each magnet has two poles, called North pole- South pole.

6. Where are poles of a bar magnet located?

Ans: The poles of a bar magnet are placed near ends of the magnet.
7. A bar magnet has no markings to indicate its poles. How would you find out near which end is
its North pole located?
Ans: With the help of a thread, the bar magnet is freely hang. The north pole of the magnet is its
end that points north.

8. You are given an iron strip. How will you make it into a magnet?
Ans: Making a magnet:
a. Take an iron strip and place it on the table.
b. Now take a bar magnet and place one of its poles near one edge of the strip of iron.
c. Without lifting it move it along the length of the iron strip till you reach the other end.
d. Now lift the magnet and bring the pole to the same point of strip from where you began.
e. Repeat this process about 30-40 times.
f. Bring some iron fillings near the strip and observe that the strip attracts the fillings.
This indicates that the iron strip becomes magnet.

9. How is a compass used to find directions?

Ans: A magnetic needle rotates freely in a compass. The magnetic needle aligns in a north-south
orientation when a compass is stored at a specific location. The North Pole is the red arrow on the
compass, and the South Pole is the opposite end, which aids compass in guiding us in the right
direction.

10. A Magnet was brought from different directions towards a toy boat that has been floating in
water in a tub. The effect observed in each case is stated in column I. possible reasons for the
observed effects are mentioned in column II. Match the statements given in column I with those in
column II.

EXTRA Q/A
1. Why does bar magnet always point in north-south directions?
Ans:Bar magnet always points in north-south directions when left freely suspended because
earth itself behaves like a magnet and north-pole of bar magnet is attracted towards south-
pole of earth’s magnet and vice versa.

2. Can we isolate north-pole or south-pole? Explain.

Ans.No, we cannot isolate north-pole of a magnet from its south-pole or vice versa. If we break
a bar magnet into two halves, we will not get a single north or south pole but two magnets
each with its north and south-poles.

3. Can a magnet be demagnetised? How?

Ans:Yes, a magnet can be demagnetised:
• By packing like poles of two magnets in same direction.
• By hammering the magnet hard.
• By heating the magnet strongly.

4. How should two-bar magnets be kept?

Ans: After using , two-bar magnets should be placed inside a wooden box in such way:
1. the poles of two magnets lie opposite to each other.
2. a wooden piece should be kept between the two magnets.
3. metallic caps should be kept on the poles, otherwise they will attract other magnetic
objects.
5. Differentiate between magnetic and non-magnetic material.
Ans: Difference between magnetic and non-magnetic materials is as follows:

Magnetic Materials Non-magnetic Materials

• A substance that is attracted to a • A substance that is not

magnet. attracted to a magnet.

• Magnetic materials can be converted • Non-magnetic substances

into artificial magnets with the help can never be converted
of another magnet. into magnets.

• E.g., leather, wood,

• E.g., iron, nickel, cobalt
plastic

Case Study-1
A magnet shows some characteristic properties e.g. directive properties according to which a
freely suspended magnet aligns itself in geographical north south direction. One other
property is attractive property, which has a number of applications. This can be associated
with law that like poles repel and unlike poles attracts. A point to note here is that a magnet
can attract another magnet as well as magnetic materials.
Answer the following questions:
1. If a bar magnet is cut length wise into four parts, how many number of poles will form?
Ans If a bar magnet is cut lengthwise into four parts it forms eight poles
2. The number of poles in a horse-shoe magnet is
Ans All the magnets have two poles, North pole and South pole.
3. Name the materials which are attracted by a magnet.
Ans Magnetic materials are attracted by a magnet.
4. (i) Like poles of magnet -
repel
(ii) Unlike poles of magnet -
attract

Case Study-2
A magnetic field is described by drawing the magnetic field lines. The magnetic field lines
always begin from the north pole of magnet and end on the south pole of the magnet. They
come closer to one another near the poles but they are widely separated at other places.
Answer the following questions.
1. What is the direction of magnetic field lines?
2. From where the strength of magnetic field is strong?
3. From where the strength of magnetic field is weak?
4. What is magnetic field?
