CHAPTER 10: Region 7 - Central Visayas Region

Objectives
At the end of the chapter, students should be able to:
1. Identify the different major attractions, activities, accommodations, and cultural highlights in
the provinces within the Central Visayas Region;
2. Create different tour packages that carry different types of tourism activities within the region;
and
3. Assess the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the region in terms of the 4 As
of tourism.

Introduction
The Central Visayas Region has two of the most dynamic tourism-driven destination in
the country. Bohol and Cebu are included in the Top Ten list of most visited destinations of both
local and domestic tourists. Siquijor is slowly creating noise as an enchanting natural destination
in Central Philippines. Central Visayas Region is comprised of the provinces of;

 Bohol;
 Cebu;
 Siquijor; and
 Negros oriental

A. Ports of Access

Cebu, bohol, and Siquijor are islands; hence, access to and from the said provinces are by
air or sea. Intra-region travel is also via sea. Tourists should consider going around the region
during the same visit to maximize seaport access within the region. Cebu and Bohol also serve as
jump-off points to some provinces in mindanao.

Rosquillos, Bibingka, Binignit, Biko, Ampao, Puto and Sikwate, Salvaro, and Ngohiong.
Siquihor - Torta, Native Bread, Peanut Ball, Crackers, Salwaki (sea urchin) and Lomboy wine
(Java Plum Wine).
Negros Oriental - Silvanas, Sans Rival, Bud-bud kabog, and Dumaguete Express.

30 until September 8), and Pahinungod Festival (May 1-10)

Cebu - Sinulog Festival (every 3rd Sunday of January, Pakuhan sa Sugbo, Kadaugan sa Mactan
(Aoril 22 - 27), Dinagat Festival (August 16), Siloy Festival (last Saturday of August), Banig
Festival (July 25), Mantawi Festival (May 5), Tostado Festival (3 rd Sunday of April), and
Kawayan Festival.

Siquijor - Bugwas Festival, Dila-ab Festival (October 1), Solili Festival (September 17), Lubi
Festival (May 21).

Negros Oriental - Buglasan Festival (2nd week of October), Sandurot Festival (3 rd week of
November), Tawo-tawo Festival (February 18), and Pasayaw Festival (March 18)

G. Major Cultural Groups


Major cultural groups in the region are the Cebuanos and Boholanos.

Cebuano used to be the largest ethnic group in the Philippines but is currently only next
to the Tagalog. The Cebuano constitutes the major ethnic population and cultural influence in
southern Philippines, making Cebuano the lingua franca of southern Philippines.

The Boholano speaks a variation of Cebuano with minor changes in pronunciation.


Whatever remains of their traditional culture has long been gone. The dialect is similar variation
of Cebuano with minor changes in pronunciation. Southern Bohol is known for unique hunting
specializations for whales, dolphins, sharks, and mantas.

H. Major Industries
Having island provinces, the major industries in the region include agriculture, fishery,
shipping, and Tourism.
