ASSIGNMENT

1. Differentiate the three types of communities and define their effect on

the educational success of students.

The three types of communities are rural, urban, and suburban and each are
different in terms of size, population, and available resources. These differences
can have a big impact on how well students do in school.

In rural communities, there are fewer people and more open spaces. Schools in
rural areas often have fewer resources, such as technology and extracurricular
programs, because there is less funding available. It can also be hard to find and
keep quality teachers, which means students might not get the specialized help
they need. Additionally, students may live far from their schools, making it
difficult for them to attend school regularly or take part in after-school activities.
However, rural communities are often close to each other, which can provide a
social support for students, even if academic resources are limited. While in
urban communities there have many people living close together in cities.
Schools in urban areas often serve students from diverse backgrounds, which
can help to enrich the learning experience. However, urban schools can also face
problems like overcrowded classrooms and uneven funding. Some schools may
have access to great resources, while others, especially in low-income areas, may
not. Students in cities might also face challenges like crime or unsafe
neighborhoods, which can affect their ability to focus on school. Despite these
challenges, the variety of people and opportunities in cities can also provide
unique learning experiences.

Lastly, Suburban communities are located near cities and have a mix of both
urban and rural features. Schools in suburban areas often have more money for
things like technology, extracurricular activities, and well-kept buildings because
they are funded by local taxes. Teachers in suburban schools are often
experienced, and parents in these communities tend to be more involved in their
children’s education. This can help students succeed academically. However, in
wealthier suburban areas, students may feel more pressure to do well in school,
which can cause stress. In conclusion, wherever a student lives whether in a
rural, urban, or suburban area it can influence their education. Each type of
community has its strengths and challenges, all of which can shape students'
academic experiences and opportunities.

2. Among the given socioeconomic factors affecting schools, watch a

documentary about this factor and narrate it. Include the basic
information about the documentaries and when it was published or
released in public. ( Paste a picture of cite or a video).

Waiting for "Superman", a 2010 documentary by Davis Guggenheim, provides a stark

view of the challenges within the American public school system. Released on
September 24, 2010, the film follows the stories of five students from different
backgrounds who are struggling to find a quality education. Their journey through the
charter school lottery system highlights the deep flaws in the current educational
setup, especially for those from less affluent communities.

The film shows how schools in richer areas often have more resources—like updated
facilities, new textbooks, and diverse extracurricular activities—while schools in
poorer neighborhoods are often left with outdated materials and crumbling buildings.
This difference in resources creates a gap in the quality of education that students
receive. For many children in under-resourced schools, the lack of proper tools and
facilities makes learning much more challenging.

In addition, the documentary illustrates how this gap in resources impacts student
performance. Children in schools with fewer resources often struggle more with their
studies, leading to lower test scores and fewer opportunities for further education. The
film highlights the frustration of parents who see their children’s potential hindered by
a lack of support and opportunities.

Another key issue the film addresses is the quality of teaching. The documentary
criticizes systems that allow ineffective teachers to remain in classrooms due to
protections that make it difficult to remove them. This problem is particularly severe
in schools that are already struggling, where the presence of less effective teachers
can further undermine students’ chances of success.

The film also touches on the importance of additional support services, such as
tutoring and counseling. In many under-resourced schools, these services are scarce or
nonexistent, leaving students without the extra help they might need to overcome
personal or academic challenges. In contrast, schools with more resources often
provide a range of support options, helping students to succeed both inside and
outside the classroom.

Ultimately, Waiting for "Superman" paints a picture of an educational system where

opportunities are unevenly distributed. The documentary portrays a system that leaves
many students, especially those in disadvantaged situations, struggling to access the
quality education they need to succeed. By following the experiences of students and
families navigating this system, the film makes a powerful case for reform,
emphasizing the need for more equitable access to educational resources and support.

The film ends on a somber note, with many of the featured students not getting into
the charter schools they hoped for, underscoring the harsh reality that for many
children, educational success is often a matter of chance rather than opportunity. This
