I. Short answer questions
1. What is a file?
Ans: The information stored in a storage device with a specific name is called a
file.

2. Write the syntax of using a file name.


Ans: <file name>.<Extension> (Example: xyz.docx)

3. Name three categories of files.


Ans: The three categories of files are Ordinary files, Directory folder/files and
Special purpose files.
4. What is the path of a file?
Ans: Path is the route through which the user can reach from the source to the
destination of a file.

5. What is meant by moving a file?


Ans: Moving a file is the process of transferring a file from one destination to
other. It is also termed as ‘Cut and paste’. In this process a file is removed from its
original position and made available at another destination.

6. What is the use of wild card characters?


Ans: Sometimes, we need to search a file in a more specific manner. In such
situation, we can use wild card characters along with the file name to be
searched. The well-known wild card characters are * and ?.

II. Long Answer Questions:


1. Write all the steps to copy a file.
Ans: Following are the steps to copy a file.
I) Go to the location from where the file is to be copied.
II) Select the file and right click on it.
III) Select the copy option from the dropdown menu.
IV) Go to the location, where the copy of the file is to be placed.
V) Right click on the empty area and click on the paste option from the dropdown
menu.

2. Differentiate between copying a file and moving a file.

Searching is the process of finding a file on the computer. Following are the steps
to search a file.
I) Click the ‘Computer’ icon that is available on the desktop. The ‘Search Computer’
box appears at the extreme right side of the window.
II) Enter the file name to be searched in the system in the ‘Search Computer’ box.
III) The computer will look for all the files throughout the system and show the
result in the window.

4. Write all the steps:


(a) To play an audio CD/audio file on window media player.
Ans: To play an audio CD or an audio file follow these steps.
I) Insert the audio CD in the DVD drive.
II) Click the ‘Windows media player’ icon. It will open the window
media player.
III) Click ‘file’ and then ‘open’. It will display all the drives in the system.
IV) Select the drive where your favourite CD or audio file is present.
V) Click open.
VI) It will display all the audio files or folders of the selected drive.
VII Select all the audio files and click ‘open’
VII) Windows media player will start playing the songs and display the title of the
song it is playing on the screen.
(b) To play a video CD/DVD/video file on VLC

Ans: To play video files or a video CD/DVD, perform the following steps.
I) Insert the video CD/DVD in the DVD drive.
II) Click the ‘VLC media player’ icon. It will open the VLC media player.
III) Click ‘media’ and then ‘Open file’. It will display all the drives of the system.
IV) Select the drive where the video CD/DVD or the video file is present.
V) Click ‘Open’
VI) It will display all the video folders of the selected drive.
VII) Select the video folder and click ‘Open’
VIII) The VLC media player will start playing the video file.
