Title: Resistors in Series and Parallel Connections.

Objective: To study the behaviour of resistors when connected in series and parallel
and verify the total resistance using theoretical and practical measurements.

Relevant PO’S:-
PO 1. Basic and Discipline Specific Knowledge: Apply knowledge of basic
mathematics, sciences and engineering fundamentals with electrical engineering
specialisation to solve the engineering problems.
PO 2. Problem analysis: Identify and analyse well-defined engineering problems
using codified standard methods.
PO 4. Engineering tools, Experimentation and Testing: Apply modern engineering

Relevant CO’S:-
CO3 - Suggest suitable electronic components for given mechanical engineering
application.
.

Apparatus Required:
1. Resistors of known values (3 or more)
2. Breadboard
3. Connecting wires
4. Multimeter (for resistance measurement)
5. Power supply (optional, for verification with current and voltage)
6. Calculator (for theoretical calculations)

Theory:
Resistors are passive components that oppose the flow of electrical current,
following Ohm's Law:
V=IxR
Where:
V is the voltage (volts),
I is the current (amperes),
R is the resistance (ohms).

Series Connection of Resistors:-

In a series configuration, resistors are connected end-to-end.

The total (equivalent) resistance in a series circuit is the sum of the individual
resistances:
R total=R1+R2+R3+⋯+Rn

Parallel Connection of Resistors:-

In a parallel configuration, resistors are connected with both terminals joined at the
same points.

The total (equivalent) resistance in a parallel circuit is given by:

1/R total=1/R1+1/R2+1/R3+⋯+1/Rn
Diagram:

Procedure:
1. Resistors in Series:
Objective: To connect resistors in series and measure the total resistance.
Steps:
○ Take three resistors R1, R2, and R3 of known values.
○ Measure the resistance of each resistor individually using a multimeter
and note the values.
○ Connect the resistors in series on a breadboard.
○ Measure the total resistance across the entire series combination using
the multimeter.
○ Calculate the total resistance using the formula for resistors in series:
Rtotal=R1+R2+R3
○ Compare the measured total resistance with the calculated value.

2. Resistors in Parallel:
Objective: To connect resistors in parallel and measure the total resistance.
Steps:
○ Take the same three resistorsR1, R2, and R3..
○ Connect the resistors in parallel on a breadboard.
○ Measure the total resistance across the parallel combination using the
multimeter.
○ Calculate the total resistance using the formula for resistors in parallel:
1/Rtotal=1/R1+1/R2+1/R3+⋯+1/Rn
○ Compare the measured total resistance with the calculated value.
