WRITING A FULL SCALE MASTER PROPOSAL

The proposal must be NO LONGER THAN 10,000 WORDS. The paper is in effect a
detailed research proposal and should therefore be written in the future tense. The proposal
must include:
 An explicit statement about the exact nature of the research problem or issue
 Review of relevant literature
 The proposed methodology
 The methods of investigation that will provide you with the type of information you need
to achieve your research objectives
 The methods you will use to analyse that information
 Reflective discussion demonstrating an awareness of the strengths and limitations of the
research design.
 Referencing list

In short, the questions you will need to consider are:

 What do you know about the problem already?

 What type/form of information do you need to achieve this?
 What methodology do you need to adopt to obtain this information?
 What precise methods do you need to adopt to obtain the information required?
 What methods do you need to adopt to analyse the information collected? (For
example quantitative analysis using SPSS. If your study includes qualitative
information give a clear account of the steps you will take in your analysis.)
 To what extent does your research design and methods comply with ethical principles
and practices?

The final research proposal will consist of the following components (although structure may
vary from this general outline):
