Senior Nursery

Autumn Term 2021

This term children will begin to listen to stories and recall story events. They will begin to
learn the letter sounds through Jolly phonics. The children will be engaged in different
activities as they explore the first six sounds in jolly phonics- s,a,t,i,p,n. Children will
extend their vocabulary, exploring the meanings and sounds of new words, reflecting on
their experiences throughout the term.
The Children will be encouraged to listen and respond appropriately in a range of
situations. They will learn to follow instructions and answer questions about their
experiences. Children will be taught how to express themselves effectively, showing an
awareness of the listener.

This term, children will begin to trace and form numbers. They will also learn to identify
and order numerals accordingly, count reliably from 1-10 and place them in order.. They
will learn to sort, classify and group different objects, toys and foods into their categories
and also talk about sorting. Children will also learn to describe shapes in simple models
and patterns. They will also learn more colours and 2-d shapes. The children will progress
to counting everyday objects and will learn to use the language bigger and smaller to
describe the shape and size of different objects. They will recognise, describe and create
patterns.

Children will begin to express and communicate ideas, thoughts and feelings, by using a
wider range of materials, tools, imaginative role play, songs and They will explore a
variety of musical instruments.
They will be encouraged to respond to comments and questions, and talk about their
creations. The children will explore the sounds of different musical instruments, and begin
to recognise repeated sounds and sound patterns. This term, the children will begin to
make constructions, collages, paintings and drawings, whilst exploring a wide range of
colour, texture, and shape.
The children will sing songs and make music including a Christmas Production.
“All about Me” will be our main focus. They will look at how they have changed since they
were babies. The children will learn about the different parts of their body and the
importance of good hygiene. They will discuss good nutrition habits and will learn to
differentiate between healthy and unhealthy foods. The children will also discuss and
learn about their family, friends and their different responsibilities. We will provide
opportunities which will develop and extend the children’s ICT skills by allowing them to
explore and complete a simple computer program, and perform simple functions on the
computer. Children will learn that a range of technology is used in places such as homes
and schools.
Children will talk about the features of their own immediate environment and how
environments might vary from one another.

The children will begin to trace straight lines, wavy lines curves and diagonal lines hence
developing their fine motor skills. They will also learn to handle tools and objects (child
friendly scissors, nuts and bolts), construction (blocks, bricks) and malleable materials
safely and with basic control. Children will also explore with play dough making different
shapes using their imagination. Children will develop good control and coordination in
large and small movements. They will learn to move confidently in a variety of ways.
Children will learn about the importance of physical exercise and healthy eating.

This term we will begin to encourage the children to be interested, excited and motivated
to learn. We will continue to encourage them to use the 5 magic words more
appropriately in any situation. Children will develop an awareness of their own needs,
views and feelings, and become sensitive to the needs, views and feelings of others. They
will understand the need for agreed values and codes of behaviour in the classroom and
the school at large.
Children will learn to play cooperatively and take turns, forming positive relationships with
adults and other children. The children will choose activities and resources and develop
confidence to try new things. They will talk about how they and others show
feelings. They will understand and follow the classroom rules.

All of the areas of learning and development are interconnected to the characteristics of effective
learning, which are ‘playing and exploring’, ‘active learning’ and ‘creating and critical thinking’.
In senior nursery, we have a balance of teacher directed tasks and child initiated activities, which allow
children to develop to their full potential.
