ArcMap Tutorial

IN THIS TUTORIAL
The best way to learn ArcMap is to try it
• Exercise 1: Exploring your data
yourself. This tutorial guides you through some

Exercise 1: Exploring your data

Exporting a layer
To find out how many lanzon and how much

point to Data, then click Export Data.

In this exercise, you’ll map population density
for the county. A population density map
shows where people are concentrated. First,
you’ll add population data for each census
tract. Then you’ll calculate population density
for each tract and map it.

Calculating attribute values


You’ll calculate the ZONE_AREA for each
lanzone_descript by dividing by the area of
each lanzone_descript; this will give you the
area of zone per square mile. To do this,

edit the census tract attributes. You can make
calculations without being in an editing
session; however, in that case, there is no way
to undo the results. (In Exercise 4, you’ll edit
the geometry of a feature.)

attribute table and click calculate geometry .

You can use ArcMap to edit your data as well
as create maps. In this exercise, you’ll extend
the road to create a new road joining an
existing arterial road, make lake layer and city
points.
