Exponential Functions

Unit 3: Exponential Functions

Intro to Exponentials
Unit 3: Exponential Functions
Lesson 1 Success Criteria: I can …
● Identify exponential functions
● Make predictions regarding exponential growth
● Model exponential functions with an equation
Definitions
Exponential Functions: A pattern of growth in which each term
is multiplied by a constant amount to produce the next term

FORM = abk(x – d) + c

a is the starting value

b is the base of the exponent & thus affects whether the function
doubles, triples, halves, etc.
Ex1 Modeling Growth
A type of bacteria triples daily. If the sample started with 100
cells:

a) Find the population after each of the first 4 days

b) Write an equation to model the growth. Graph on DESMOS

c) Predict the population after 1 week & 2 weeks of growth

Ex2 Modeling Growth
The # of transistors that can fit on a computer chip doubles
every 2 years. Suppose this change directly impacted the cost of a
computer chip. Suppose a computer chip can be purchased for
70$

a) Create a table of values to model the change in cost of a

computer chip over the next 6 years

b) Create an exponential function to model the change in price

Success Criteria Review

● Can I make predictions regarding exponential growth?
● Can I model exponential functions with an equation?

Growth & Decay
Unit 3: Exponential Functions
Lesson 2 Success Criteria: I can …
● Identify exponential growth or decay functions
● Use exponential functions to make predictions
Definitions
● Exponential Growth: An exponential function that results in
an increasing quantity over time. Curves up & to the right
○ The base of the power is greater than 1 ( b > 1 )
● Exponential Decay: An exponential function that results in a
decreasing quantity over time. Curves down & to the right
○ The base of the power is a fraction or decimal ( 0 < b < 1 )
● Growth Rate: The rate at which a value changes over time
● Half-life: The time it takes for a quantity to decrease to half
of its original amount
Ex1 Exponential Growth
Growth of bacteria on a petri dish can be modeled by the function N(x) = 5(1.2)0.5x …
where x is the time in days & N(x) is the # of bacteria measured on the petri dish
A) How many bacteria are present at the start of the experiment?
B) Create a table of values to model the change in the # of bacteria over the course of
the week
C) Graph the function on DESMOS
D) How might the domain & range be restricted for this scenario?
Ex2 Exponential Decay
Carbon-14 is a radioisotope thats decay is modeled by a half-life
exponential function. C(x) represents the % of C-14 remaining, x
represents the time in years, 100 is the starting point (100%), &
the half-life is 5,730 years (in other words, every 5,730 years the
amount of C-14 gets cut in half one time)
Ex2 Exponential Decay (continued)
A) Create an exponential function to model the scenario
B) Bristlecone pine fossils carbon date to 6000 years old. What
% of the original C-14 remains in the fossil?
C) How many years would it take for a sample of C-14 to be
reduced to 25%
D) What are some flaws with using this carbon dating technique
that you can spot?

● Evaluate rational exponents
Investigate P170 # 1-6
Definitions
Rational Exponents are exponents composed of fractions. They
can often be broken down into a root & a whole # exponent
Ex1 Simple Rational Exponents
a) 81/3 b) –161/4 c) (–27)1/3
Ex2 Complex Rational Exponents
