WDM

Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) is a fiber-optic technology that allows multiple

data streams to be transmitted simultaneously over a single optical fiber.

WDM uses different wavelengths of laser light to multiplexed optical carrier signals onto a
single optical fiber.
WDM uses different colors of light to send data over the same medium. Each
application is allocated to a dedicated color (wavelength) to communicate with a
remote station

The actual light could be of almost any wavelength—from roughly 670 nanometers to
1550 nanometers.
Types of WDM:
Coarse WDM (CWDM):
• CWDM is defined by WDM systems with fewer than eight active wavelengths per fiber.
• CWDM is used for short-range communications, so it employs wide-range frequencies
with wavelengths that are spread far apart
• CWDM is a compact and cost-effective option when spectral efficiency is not an
important requirement.

Dense WDM (DWDM):

• DWDM is defined in terms of frequencies. DWDM’s tighter wavelength spacing fits more
channels onto a single fiber, but costs more to implement and operate.
• DWDM is for systems with more than eight active wavelengths per fiber. DWDM dices
spectrum finely, fitting 40-plus channels into the C-band frequency range.

DWDM Advantages
Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) has several advantages, including:
•Increased bandwidth: WDM uses multiple light wavelengths to send data over a single
optical fiber, increasing the bandwidth and data rate without adding new equipment or
fibers.
•Network expansion: WDM can connect new channels without disrupting existing traffic.
•Reliability: WDM is a reliable system that can transmit and receive data for extreme
bandwidth activity.
•Compatibility: WDM is compatible with different signals.
•Flexibility: WDM technology allows for easier upgrades by connecting new channels as
needed.
•Security and privacy: WDM can improve security and privacy by using different wavelengths for different users
or applications.
•Interoperability: WDM supports the integration and interoperability of different network protocols and
standards.
•Cost-effectiveness: CWDM is a cost-effective solution for networks with moderate bandwidth requirements.
