PROBLEM 13 – 0449: The material from which the truss of Fig. 1 is constructed
has a stress-strain equation
ε = 6 × 10–5 (± 0.04σ2 + σ)
while the stresses are increasing, the + and – signs referring
to tension and compression respectively. The
cross-sectional area of each bar is 0.5 in2. Find the residual
bar forces and joint displacements when the 20 kip load is
applied.

Solution: Let N1, N2, and N3 be forces in bar AD, AC and AB respectively.
Using equilibrium conditions (at joint A), one obtains the following
equations.

∑Fy = 0, 20 – N2 sin 30 – N3 sin 60 = 0

∑Fx = 0, N1 – N2 cos 30 – N3 cos 60 = 0.
There are two equilibrium equations and three bar forces. Hence
we must choose one unknown. Take the force in AC as the unknown, and
call it R (for redundant force). Using the two equations of equilibrium,
express the three bar forces in terms of unknown R. Knowing that N2 = R,
we have,
N3 sin 60 = 20 – R sin 30
N1 = – N3 cos 60 – R cos 30
or
.866 N3 = 20 – 0.5 R
N1 = – 0.5 N3 – .866 R
Thus, N3 = – 23.1 – 0.5774 R
N1 = 11.55 – 0.5774 R (1)
N2 = R
Next using equation σ = (N / A), obtain the σ for each bar. Thus,
σAD = (N1 / A1) = (N1 / 0.5) = 2N1
σAC = (N2 / A2) = (R / .5) = 2R
σAB = (N3 / A3) = (N3 / .5) = 2N3
