7
SCROLL COMPRESSORS
The scroll compressors are consists of two involutes or Archimedean spirals. One spiral is positioned inside the other to form
a series of crescent-shaped pockets. During compression the upper spiral remains stationary and the lower one, being eccen-
trically mounted on the drive shaft, describes an orbital rather than a simple rotary motion.

Compressor working principle Scroll compressor

1. Compression in the scroll is created by the interaction of an orbiting spiral and a stationary spiral. A refrigerant enters the
outer openings as one of the spirals orbits.

2. The open passages are sealed off as gas is drawn into the spiral.

3. As the spiral continues to orbit, the gas is compressed into two increasingly smaller pockets.

4. By the time the gas arrives at the center port, discharge pressure has been reached.

5. During operation, all six gas passages are in various stages of compression at all times, resulting in nearly continuous suction
and discharge.

Refrigerant enters the compressor at the suction connection and flows around the motor’s housing and enters at the bottom
side through the openings and oil droplets separate from the refrigerant and fall into the oil sump. All suction refrigerant passes
through the electrical motor, ensuring full motor cooling, after that the refrigerant enters the scroll elements.

G. MICROPROCESSOR CONTROLLER

These Packaged units are provided with a microprocessor control board incorporating the following features:

A. BALANCE LOADING OF COMPRESSORS: The unit’s electronic control automatically operates lead/lag sequence of
compressors. This is to load the compressors evenly over long periods of operation. If required however, compressor #1 can
also be set to always lead. In this case, compressor #1 always starts first and stops last. (Selectable through dip switch setting
on control board).

B. PUMP DOWN FUNCTION: In units equipped with pump down system, the controller provides the time delay between
solenoid’s opening and compressor starting to equalize the pressure in the system necessary for compressor to start-up.
(Selectable through dip switch setting on control board).

C. COMPRESSOR ANTI-RECYCLING PROTECTION: The controller has a built-in 3 minutes minimum off timer for compressor.
This is for compressor protection in case of accidental manual re-set or immediate re-cycling of thermostat due to load
demand.

D. COMPRESSOR LOCK-OUT FUNCTION: If any of the unit’s safety control trips due to abnormal conditions, the electronic
controls locks out the compressor after a pre-determined timing preventing a re-start unless attended by a qualified service
technician. The unit can be re-started through thermostat re-set after ensuring safe system conditions.

E. FAULT DIAGNOSTICS: In case of system fault, LED’s on the board emits a flashing signal indicating where the fault is. This
is to guide the service technician in identifying the fault.

F. DIGITAL I/O’s: The unit’s control board is compatible to operate with a DDC controller or any standard 24V a.c. thermostat
commercially available.

OPTIONAL ITEMS

A. Microchannel Condenser Coils (MCHX)

Microchannel coils are an aluminum construction coil and
composed of:
1. Extended flat tubes with many small flow channels.
2. Flat fins that are brazed to adjoining tubes.
3. Two refrigerant manifold headers.

Advantages of MCHX:
1. MCHX coils have more heat transfer per square foot than traditional
coils and require much less refrigerant charge.
2. No galvanic corrosion (100% aluminum).
3. Reduction in refrigerant charge compare to normal finned and tube
coils.
4. Long life alloy for very aggressive environments.
5. Improving the unit energy efficiency ratio (EER).
6. MCHX is lighter in weight, smaller in volume.

As an option, Zamil Air Conditioners can offer:

*Anti-Corrosive Coating is recommended for seacoast or
other corrosive applications and ambient environments.

B. MIXING BOX SECTION

When fresh air and return air mixing is required, mixing box is selected. The mixing box section is constructed of single wall of
heavy gauge galvanized steel with 1" thick (25mm) 3 Ibs/ft3 (48 Kg/m3) density fiberglass insulation. A double skin (inner wall)
made of galvanized steel with 1" (25mm) thick fiberglass insulation can be provided as an option.

C. MANUAL & MOTORIZED DAMPERS

The best way to control the return airflow with fresh air is by adding dampers on the mixing box section. These dampers are
heavy duty, multi-blade, low leakage and of opposed blade design. The dampers are prepared for either manual or motorized
operation (motor can be provided as an option).

Zamil dampers are entirely made of aluminum profiles with reinforced polyamide accessories, the blades of the damper has
airfoil shape and perfectly controlled by gears that are spaced out by special spacers located in the damper frame.

Zamil damper has an excellent anti-corrosion features as it is made of aluminum and polyamide which make it light in weight
and yet extremely strong because of its well-engineered design. The damper’s air tightness is enhanced by special gasket
inserted in both, the blades and the frame itself.

The outdoor air damper is equipped with a rain hood (factory installed) as standard on the side of the unit as seen in Figure
below. The rain hood is constructed from galvanized steel, finished with the same durable paint finish as the main unit and
includes cleanable aluminum filter to drain water away from the entering air stream.

Mixing Box & Dampers

D. BAG FILTER SECTION
The bag filter section is constructed of single wall heavy gauge galvanized steel with 1" thick (25mm) 3 Ibs/ft3 (48 Kg/m3) densi-
ty fiberglass insulation. As an option, double skin (inner wall) made of galvanized steel with 1" (25mm) thick fiberglass insulation
can be provided. Per filter media is an aluminum filter or pleated while the bag filter media is synthetic micro-fiber with high
efficiency air cleaning capability. As an option, the filter pressure gauge (Magnehelic manometer) can be ordered with each filter
section to help promote regular servicing and prevent clogging.

E. 4" MINI PLEATED FILTER:

As alterative solution to bag Fitter, Zamil can offer high efficiency filter with compact design, which is equivalent to bag filter
efficiency 4" mini pleated filter is designed to perform in difficult operating conditions .The filter media is made of ultra-fine wet
laid fibers.

Mini Pleated Filter

F. HOT GAS BYPASS CONTROL

Hot gas bypass control can be provided on the lead circuit to permit operation of the system down to 80% of its unloaded
capacity. Under low ambient conditions, it controls temperature by eliminating the need to cycle the compressor on and off,
ensuring narrow temperature swing and lengthening the life span of the compressor.

G. PUMP DOWN SOLENOID VALVE

A pump down solenoid valve is installed in the liquid line. When the room thermostat is satisfied, the valve closes and the
compressor continues to run until a substantial portion of the refrigerant has been pumped out from the evaporator coil. The
low-pressure switch will cycle off the compressor at a predetermined evaporator pressure.

H. DRIP ELIMINATOR
The drip (moisture) eliminator is required when the velocity across the cooling coil is above 500 FPM (2.54 m/s). Eliminators are
made of plastic material encased within a galvanized steel frame, which is placed between the coil and blower. This arrange-
ment eliminates water carry over with low-pressure drop.

I. PRESSURE GAUGES
This option is used for monitoring and inspecting the suction and discharge pressure, it is installed on the condensing section,
which allows inspection of refrigerant system performance.

J. UNIT FULL GUARD

The guard is mounted on the condensing section only, which protects the condenser coil from physical damage.

17
K. BULK HEAD LIGHT
The bulk headlight can be equipped inside the fan section to provide light for servicing purpose.

L.VARIABLE FREQNACY DRIVE FOR BLOWER MOTOR (VFD)

Variable Frequency Drives are installed on blower fan motors to vary the fan speed in applica-
tions where the supply CFM is not constant and must be varied. In applications where Variable
Air Volume (VAV’s), for example, are installed throughout the occupied space, the total CFM
discharged by the packaged unit will depend on the demand requested by the VAV boxes. When
the space is satisfied and the VAV box closes its damper, the total required CFM will be reduced.
To avoid over pressurizing the ducting, a Variable Frequency Drive is installed to reduce the
speed of the fan and hence reduce the total CFM discharged by the unit. A full range of Variable
Frequency Drives 40 (220V-3Phase, 380/480V-3phase).

N.FAN CYCLE SWITCH HEAD PRESSURE CONTROL

The capacity of air-cooled condensers varies with the difference between condensing temperature and condenser entering air
temperature (ambient temperature). It increases as this difference increases. For a given capacity, a drop in the ambient
temperature will lower the condensing temperatures and if the ambient temperature drops below a given limit, head pressure
control is required. Control shall be set for a minimum of 95°F (35°C) saturated refrigerant condensing temperature, or to suit
the specified application.

O.CIRCUIT BREAKER FOR COMPRESSORS OR CONDENSER MOTOR OR BLOWER MOTOR

This feature protects against branch circuit fault. When tripped (manually or automatically), the breaker cut-off the power supply
to the compressor /condenser motor /blower motor and disable its control through the breaker's auxiliary contacts.

P. MOTOR EXTERNAL OVERLOAD PROTECTION

Motors are provided with overload relays or a built-in thermal winding device or both for its overload protection.

18
Q.ECONOMIZER/CO2 MONITORING
The economizer permits low cost operation by utilizing cool outdoor air for free cooling. A damper on the economizer controls
the amount of outdoor air and on closed position it provides a leak proof seal. It can easily be adjusted for 100% outdoor air,
100% return air or any proportions of mixed air.

The economizer is operated either by a dry bulb outdoor air thermostat (OAT) or a solid state enthalpy controller (EC) used to
sense the outdoor air temperature. The unit is equipped with an electronic control board and the economizer uses controller
with a sensitive feedback system that carefully modulates the damper to allow correct percentage of fresh air and return air.
The economizer controller is designed to match with the Zamil electronic thermostat.

1. OUTDOOR AIR THERMOSTAT (OAT) ECONOMIZER CONTROL

Economizer operation is governed by outdoor temperature and unit OAT setting, as follows:

a. Outdoor Temperature > Outdoor Air Thermostat (OAT) setting:

If the thermostat calls for cooling, the economizer damper moves to minimum position, simultaneously blower motor, compres-
sor-1 & fan motors would start. If further cooling is required, compressor-2 also starts with a time delay. After the thermostat is
satisfied the compressors are staged out. The economizer controller moves the damper automatically to closed position simul-
taneously the blower is also shutdown.

b. Outdoor Temperature < Outdoor Air Thermostat (OAT) setting:

As the cooling load would be low, the economizer controller will operate as stage-1 of cooling system first switching ON the
blower motor simultaneously modulating the damper in steps to required position, allowing the cool outside air into indoor side.
If further cooling is required compressor-1 & fan motors will switch ON as stage-2 of the system, whereas compressor-2 is
pulled out of service. As the room temperature is attained, economizer controls will cut-off the compressor, fan motors simulta-
neously closing damper to fully closed position.

2. ENTHALPY SENSOR FOR ECONOMIZER CONTROL

The solid state enthalpy sensor is capable of accurately sensing outdoor air enthalpy content (temperature & humidity) and
controlling the economizer damper for the minimum heat content introduce to the evaporator coil. Thereby, providing an
efficient & economical system operation.

3. CO2 MONITOR
Indoor air quality (IAQ) is becoming more and more important, CO2 monitoring give an indication of the amount of CO2 inside
a facility. Once it is exceeding a certain level it sends a signal to the control system demanding for fresh air to replace the inside
poor quality air. The control is responding in opening the damper and at the same time there is input in the control for an
exhaust relief fan externally connected to the unit as it purge the poor quality air.

19
R.ULTRA VIOLET LIGHT

1. IMPROVED OVERALL INDOOR AIR QUALITY

When used for general IAQ control, UV FLOWTM products can successfully:
• Control fungi in HVAC systems to reduce or eliminate mold-related allergies.
• Prevent the development of different types of bacteria.
• Reduce the spread of cold and flu viruses and other airborne transmitted diseases.
• Eliminate odors and maintain a fresh air smell indoors.

UV FLOWTM Emitters pose no risk to components, equipment or inhabitants. Their

non-chemical energy kills organisms without producing secondary contamination
and costs little to operate.

UV Light

2. SAVE ENERGY AND CUT COSTS

UV FLOWTM can reduce maintenance cost as UVC lights successfully eliminate the bio-film (dirt) that fouls surface of heat
exchangers - completely cleaning and continuously maintaining coils and drain pans to 'as new' conditions. This in turn
improves heat-transfer efficiency, coil pressure drop, and fan performance.

S.DISCONNECT SWITCH
A single non-fused disconnect switch is provided for disconnecting electrical power
at the unit. The disconnect switch is mounted internally on the control panel and
operated by an externally mounted handle. Disconnect Switch

T.ELECTRONIC THERMOSTAT
Electronic thermostat can control up to four cooling stages and four heating stages
depending on the number of compressors and electric heaters.

The thermostat normally displays room temperature and mode of operation. The
temperature can be set by up/down buttons for both cooling and heating cycles. The
thermostat also allows you to select continuous fan operation or have the fan on
intermittent operation with the equipment. The thermostat is best located about 1500
mm (5 Ft.) above floor level, on a partition wall (not an outside wall), and should not
be exposed to direct light from lamps, sun etc. It should be in return air stream, away
from supply air registers/diffusers.

Electronic Thermostat

U. ANTI-CORROSIVE COATING

been designed for Middle East climate conditions. A high chemical, abrasion and UV resistance has been proven in both
laboratories and on field environment. The coating can be applied at the factory as well as in the field for maintenance or rejuve-
nation purposes.

Multi : A two component coating system that withstands the extreme climate conditions. The coating can be applied
to all metal parts of HVAC equipment; the piping, the compressors and grids might require a different pretreatment and layer
build up. Please check ResisTec product information sheets, the heat exchangers can not be coated using this type. The coating
can be applied at the factory as well as in the field for maintenance or rejuvenation purposes.
