Math 7
Department Philosophy
The middle school math program believes in providing an engaging, problem-centered curriculum that
balances acquisition of concrete skills with abstract concepts. The program emphasizes mathematical
communication, critical thinking, and connections between mathematical topics. The curriculum follows
the Common Core State Standards used in the United States. More information can be found at
http://www.corestandards.org/Math.
Course Overview
Working both individually and in groups to solve authentic problems, student’s progress from concrete
representations to abstract algebraic ideas. Emphasis is placed on continuing to develop critical thinking
and computational skills. Concepts and skills are introduced in an integrated manner using a variety of
methods.
Course Textbook: Students will have access to the following two texts:
1. Mathematics, Course 2 (Holt McDougal, 2010) – Electronic copy.
2. Mathematics, Course 3 (Prentice Hall, 2004) – Hard copy for home and a classroom set.
The core resource for Math 7, Connected Mathematics, will be supplemented to support and extend the
standards. Each teacher provides specific course information on schoology.
The purpose of the grading system is to provide accurate information about a student’s level of
understanding with respect to specific content standards. Our goal is to move student thinking
toward the quest for knowledge.

Students will be assessed with respect to their understanding of grade-level standards (Academic
Achievement) and their habits as a learner inside and outside the classroom (Learning Behaviors). To
support the development of a growth mindset, students will have multiple opportunities to demonstrate
their understanding through a variety of formative and summative assessments. To help establish a clear
vision of the intended learning, students will engage in on-going reflection as a means to identify learning
strengths and areas for improvement.
Learning Behaviors
Students will be assessed on being:
Academic Achievement
Feedback on academic achievement will be provided after formative and summative assessments, as well
as during daily classwork. The goal is for the student, teacher, and parent to understand where a student’s
performance is in relation to proficiency on reporting standards as well as learning behaviors are indicated
by the following grading scale:
● B - Beginning
● A - Approaching
● M – Meeting
● E – Excelling
Assignments
Assignments will be selected to help work towards a full understanding of a standard. Some activities will
require completion out of class or additional questions will be assigned to provide extra practice. All work
should be attempted prior to the next class session and will be assessed as part of the responsible learning
habit.
Absences
Students who are absent due to sickness, or school sponsored trips are still expected to meet obligations of
school work for each subject. For students traveling, a travel checklist form needs to be completed two days
before departing. This allows the teachers the opportunity to conference with the students and sign off on
agreed assigned work. Given the sequential nature of mathematics, timely completion of assignments is
essential.

Academic progress will be updated on schoology and PowerSchool regularly, giving you and your
parents an opportunity to learn how successful you are. Please get into the habit of checking your
grade book. This will assist you in knowing whether you need to come in for extra help, if you have
any missing assignments, and if an entry has been missed. See us right away if you notice any
discrepancies.
