OS Update vs Upgrade

To avoid confusion of terms, it is to note that OS update and upgrade can

also refer to software updates and upgrade since OS is the main software running
in a computer. Software updates and upgrades may sound alike, but there are
important differences that you should understand.

Software Updates

Software updates are a way for software developers to improve a product to

make it the best it can be. They offer small, frequent improvements rather than
major changes. Unlike a software upgrade, updates need the existing software
program you’re using to work.

Updates sometimes run automatically in the background. Other times,

software updates (commonly referred to as ‘patches’) come in the form of a free
download. They’re usually necessary for your product to continue running
successfully.

Example: Updating Windows 10.0.18363 (November 2019 update/version

1909) to Windows 10.0.19041 (May 2020 update/version 2004)

Software Upgrade

Software upgrade is a bit different. Instead of building on your existing

program, a software upgrade is a new version of the software product entirely.

A software upgrade, then, supersedes the old product. Upgrades are used for
significant changes and major improvements to your current version of the program.
It might have an overhauled user interface, or an exciting set of new features, or key
structural changes.

Unlike updates, software upgrades aren’t always compulsory or necessary for

a program to keep running. Completing a product upgrade may involve a new
purchase or pricing system. Because of this, companies will often offer existing
customers incentives to upgrade their software. For example, they might reduce the
upgrade cost or stop supporting their legacy program.

Examples of operating system upgrades include upgrading from Windows 7

to Windows 8 or Windows 10, or on Macs, to upgrading from OS 9 to OS X or macOS.

Why are Software Updates Important?

1. Protect you against security risks

Having outdated software with no updates increases the risk of a security
breach. New-found weaknesses and malware mean that without software updates,
your product could be more vulnerable to security threats. Updates are a way to
implement fixes and safeguarding to help reduce these risks.
2. Fix bugs and improve functionality
The software you’re using will have gone through rigorous testing before you
bought and downloaded it. But unfortunately, some bugs, glitches and other
problems can still make it through the net. Software updates fix these issues and
keep your program running smoothly.
3. Enhanced Compatibility With Applications
If your operating system is outdated or you just keep on skipping those
“annoying” alerts, there’s a good chance that your installed programs will just stop
working. Newer applications are created and updated to run on modern systems.
9
Updating the windows operating system will ensure that your programs will run
properly and not run into any compatibility issues.

Why are Software Upgrades Important?

1. Offer new features and enhanced functionality

A software upgrade is often better than its previous version. It’ll have more
features, incorporate new technology and advancements, and run smoother and
faster. They can come with improved ease of use, or even incorporate a way to save
energy and improve power consumption.
2. Will continue to receive updates
After a while, software companies will stop supporting older software
versions. This means that old or legacy software will eventually stop being
compatible with the hardware and operating systems you’re using. It also means
that older software will be less secure against hackers and malware than the
upgrade.

Understanding Software Versioning

All software applications have version numbers associated with them. This
number helps track iterations of the software, including updates and upgrades. It
is represented as a series of numbers separated by periods.

The leftmost number in a software's version number represents major

upgrades to the software. For example, going from version 1.0 to 2.0 in software is
a major upgrade. These upgrades may also have version names associated with
them such as Windows 10 or OS X Mavericks.

The rightmost number in a software's version number generally represents

minor updates. Going from version 3.0.2 to 3.0.3 is usually a small change and is
usually delivered as a free update.

How to Update Your Windows Operating System?

Since not all computer have the same operating systems and versions and
majority are using Microsoft OS, this will cater Windows OS discussions on updates
and upgrades. Windows PC’s have relatively frequent updates, and the security
concerns make it important to keep up with them regularly. But how about if we
have different operating systems? How do we update and upgrade them eventually?

Previous Windows operating systems like Windows XP and 7 has already

reached their “end-of-life,” or EOL, and become officially obsolete. This means no
more updates, no more features, and no more security patches. On the other hand,
Windows 8 will remain under the same lifecycle policy as Windows 8 with support
10
ending January 10, 2023. Taking into consideration the disadvantages of having an
outdated operating system, it is BEST therefore to upgrade your Windows operating
system to the latest Windows 10.

How to Upgrade to Windows 10?

To get Windows 10, you’ll need a computer that meets minimum specs,
including a 1 gigahertz or faster processor and at least 1GB of RAM.

Here's how to get Windows 10 for free, if you're currently running a licensed
and activated copy of Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 Home or Pro:

1. Go to the Download Windows 10 website.

2. Under Create Windows 10 installation media, click Download tool now
and Run.

3. Choose Upgrade this PC

now, assuming this is the only
PC you're upgrading. (If you're
upgrading a different machine,
choose Create installation
media for another PC, and
save the installation files.)

How to Update Windows 10

Updating the software on your laptop is an easy and effective way to

make sure your system runs smoothly. When you update Windows 10, your
PC will have the latest features, bug fixes, and, most important, security
patches.

11
Fortunately, Windows will periodically check for the latest system
updates and install them automatically. All you need to do is restart your
computer to ensure the updates finish installing. As convenient as
automatic updates are, there are times when you'll want to manually check
for updates, like when an important security patch is rolling out or if you've
encountered a major bug.

How to Manually Update Windows 10
