PART-A (10×2=20)
(Answer all the questions)
1. Define characteristic impedance.
2. When does reflection occur in a line?
3. What is delay distortion?
4. Define reflection coefficient.
5. Find the characteristic impedance of a line at 1600Hz if ZOC = 750∠-30° Ω and
ZSC = 600∠-20° Ω.
6. What are primary and secondary constants in transmission line?
7. Define skin effects.
8. State the properties of infinite lines.
9. What are nodes and antinodes in standing waves.
10.Write the condition for a distortionless line.

PART B (5 X 13 = 65)

11.a) An open wire line which is 200 Km long is properly terminated.


The generator at the sending end has V = 10V, f = 1 KHz and internal
impedance of 500 Ω. At that frequency, the characteristic
impedance of the line is (700+ j100) ohms and =0.007+j0.04 per
Km. Determine the sending end voltage, current and power and the
receiving end voltage, current and power.

b) Derive the expression for voltage and current at any point on a


transmission line in terms of receiving end voltage and current. Also
derive it for a line terminated by Z0. (13 MARKS)
12.a) i) Derive the input impedance of open and short circuited lines and
also derive the expression of transfer impedance. (7MARKS)
ii) A line has the following primary constants R = 100Ω / km, L =
0.001 H/Km, G = 1.5 μ mho / Km, C = 0.062 μF /Km. Find the
characteristic impedance and propagation constant at frequency 1000
Hz. (6 MARKS)
(Or)

b) i) The characteristic impedance of a uniform transmission line is


2039.5 Ω at a frequency of 800 Hz. At this frequency the propagation
constant was found to be 0.05487.9Determine the values of primary
constants. (6 MARKS)

ii) Explain in detail about waveform distortion and also derive the
condition for minimum attenuation in a distortion less line (7MARKS)

13. a) Derive the expression for the input impedance of dissipation less
line and find the maximum and minimum impedance. (13 MARKS)

13. b) Describe quarter wave transmission line. Discuss the applications of


quarter wave transmission line. (7 MARKS)

b)Explain single stub matching of transmission line and derive the expressions.

14.(a). A generator of 2 volts and 10 MHz frequency is connected to a


transmission line which has series impedence of 50+j50 ohms/km and shunt
admittance of (2+j4)X 10-6 ohms/km.Find the characteristics impedance and
propagation constant.Find the power delivered to the load impedance of
impedence 100+j100 ohms. (13MARKS)

(OR)

14(b)i. A generator of 1V, 1000 cycles, supplies power to a 100 mile open wire
line terminated in ZO and having following parameters: Series resistance R =
10.4 ohm/ mile, Series inductance L = 0.00367 H/mile, Shunt conductance G = 0.8
x 10-6 mho/ mile, and capacitance between conductors C = 0.00835 μF/mile.
Find the characteristic impedance, Propagation constant, attenuation constant,
phase shift constant, velocity of propagation and wavelength.

(b)ii.A transmission line has the following constants R=10.4 ohm/km,L=3.666m


H/km,G=0.8X10^-6mho/km and C=0.00835uf/km. calculate characteristic
impedance and attenuation constants,phase constants,phase velocity at 1KHZ.

15(a)Define the reflection coefficient and voltage standing wave ratio and draw
the voltage and current wave forms when the transmission line is terminated by
matched load ,short circuit ,open circuit and reactance terminations.(13MARKS)

(ii)standing wave ratio. (7MARKS)

PART-C(15X1=15)
16 (a). What is loading? Explain the different types of loading and also
prove that distortionless line can be achieved by means of loading.
(Or)
b) A generator of 1V, 1000 cycles, and supplies power to a 100 mile
open wire line terminated in 200 ohms resistance. The line parameters
are R = 10.4 ohms per mile, L = 0.00367 Henry per mile, G = 0.8 106
mho per mile, C = 0.00835 µF per mile. Determine the following
parameters; Reflection coefficient, Sending end impedance, Sending
end current, Receiving end current, Receiving end voltage, Input
power, Power delivered to the load and Efficiency of transmission
line.
