How do you study?

1 Read the texts about South Korea and The USA. What is a ‘cram school’?
What can you see in the pictures?

South Korea
In South Korea students start school at 8.00 a.m. and finish
at 4.00 p.m. After school, they go to a study room or library
for yaja or ‘evening home study’. They finish at about 10.00
p.m. and go home. Then many students go to cram school
called hagwon and finish at 2 a.m. Students do extra study
to prepare for NCAT – the university entrance test. Some high
school students only sleep five and a half hours a night, so
they are really tired the next day. Lots of students say they
study 16 hours a day and only have two hours to relax.

The USA
Students in the USA don’t usually go to cram school. School
starts at about 7.30 or 8.00 a.m. and finishes at 2.30 or 3.00
p.m. High school students study for about seven hours a day at
school and have about 17.5 hours of homework a week. After
school they play sports, meet friends or go home. Students take
standard exams like SATs (Standard Attainment Tests) and use
online resources or study with their books at home after school.
But some parents are very busy and they don’t have time to help,
so they pay for a tutor to help their children with homework.
