1. The 2 kg disk rests on a smooth horizontal surface and is attached to an elastic cord that has a stiffness
k c = 20 N/m and is initially unstretched. If the disk is given a velocity (v D)1 = 1.5 m/s, perpendicular to
the cord, determine the rate at which the cord is being stretched and the speed of the disk at the instant
the cord is stretched 0.2 m.

2. A homogenous sphere of radius R = 10 cm rotating about its vertical axis of symmetry is gently placed
onto a hole of radius r 1 = 8.0 cm made into a horizontal fixed metal thin slab. Centre of the hole is below
the center of the sphere. The sphere stops rotating in a time interval t 1 = 9 s. Calculate time t 2 required
to stop rotation of the same sphere, if it is placed rotating with the same angular velocity onto a hole
of radius r 2 = 6.0 cm made in another horizontal sheet of the same metal.
3. A rectangular rigid fixed block has a long horizontal edge. A solid homogeneous cylinder of radius R is
placed horizontally at rest with its length parallel to the edge such that the axis of the cylinder and the
edge of the block are in the same vertical plane as shown in figure. There is sufficient friction present
at the edge so that a very small displacement causes the cylinder to roll off the edge without slipping.
Determine:
(i) the angle qC through which the cylinder rotates before it leaves contact with the edge.
(ii) the speed of the centre of mass of the cylinder before leaving contact with the edge.
(iii) the ratio of the translational and rotational kinetic energies of the cylinder when its centre of mass
is in horizontal line with the edge.
4. A wedge of mass m and triangular cross-section (AB = BC = CA = 2R) is moving with a velocity viˆ
towards a sphere of radius R fixed on a smooth horizontal table as shown in the figure. The wedge makes
an elastic collision with the fixed sphere and returns along the same path without any rotation. Neglect
all friction and suppose that the wedge remains in contact with the sphere for a very short time Dt, during
which the sphere exerts a constant force F on the wedge.
r
(i) Find the force F and also the normal force N exerted by the table on the wedge during the time t .
(ii) Let h denote the perpendicular distance between the centre of mass of the wedge and the line of
action of F . Find the magnitude of the torque due to the normal force N about the centre of the
wedge, during the interval Dt.
5. A cylinder of radius R and moment of inertia I (about an axis passing though its C.M.) is fixed at C. Its
highest point is in level with two horizontal surfaces. A block of mass M is initially moving to the right
without friction with speed v 1 passes over the cylinder to dotted position. Calculate the speed v 2 in the
dotted position of the block, if the friction between cylinder and the block is large enough, so that the
slipping between them ultimately ceases before the separation.
6. A slender rod of length l forming an angle q with the horizontal strikes a frictionless floor at A with its
C.M.’s velocity v c and no angular velocity. Assuming that the impact at A is perfectly elastic, find the
angular velocity of the rod immediately after the impact.
7. A homogeneous rod of mass m and length 2 l is dropped from a certain height at an inclination q to the
horizontal. It collides elastically on ground and rebounds with a spin. At first, the end A collides with the
ground. From what height/heights must the stick be dropped such that end B collides next with ground
after the rebound, at the same angle of inclination q.
8. A disk of diameter D and mass M is hanging in a vertical plane pegged at its centre. At time t = 0 a fly
of mass m sits at the end of a horizontal diameter and starts moving up such that it always remains at
the end of the horizontal diameter AB.
the disk.
9. A cylinder of mass ‘m’ and radius ‘r’ rests on two supports of the same height as shown in the figure.
One support is stationary, while the other slides from under the cylinder at a velocity v. Determine the
force of normal pressure N exerted by the cylinder on the stationary support at the moment when the
distance between points A and B of the supports AB = rÖ2, assuming that the supports were very close
to each other at the initial instant. The friction between the cylinder and the supports should be neglected.
10. A uniform disc of radius R = 20 cm has a round cut as shown in the figure. The mass of the remaining
portions of the disc equals M = 7.3 kg. Find the moment of inertia of such a disc relative to the axis passing
through its centre of inertia and perpendicular to the plane of the disc.
11. Two cylinders having radii R1 and R2 (R1 > R2 ) and rotational inertial I 1 and I2, respectively, are supported by
fixed axes perpendicular to the plane of the figure. The larger cylinder is initially rotating with angular velocity
w0 . The small cylinder is moved to the right until it touches the large cylinder and is caused to rotate by the
frictional force between the two. Eventually slipping ceases, and the two cylinders rotate at constant rates in
opposite directions. Find the angular velocity w2 of the small cylinder in terms of I 1, I2, R1 , R2 and w0 .
12. A spool lies on an inclined plane. A thread is wound on the spool and its free end carrying a weight having
a mass m is thrown over a weightless pulley. It is assumed that the mass of the spool M is uniformly
distributed over a circle with a radius R and there is no friction. Determine the angle of inclination a at
which the centre of gravity of the spool will be at rest.
13. A bullet of momentum P hits a cylindrical log of mass M and radius R centrally, and gets embedded.
Neglect mass of the bullet compared to the log. The coefficient of friction of the surface with the log is
µ.
(i) How may turns the cylinder does before it starts rolling ?
(ii) What is its angular velocity when it starts rolling ?
14. A 2 m board is placed in a truck with one end on the floor and the other leaning against a vertical partition
(figure 1). Knowing that the coefficient of stab friction is 0.30 between the board and the floor and zero
between the board and the partition, determine the maximum allowable deceleration of the truck if the board is
to remain the position shown.

15. A 35 kg cabinet is mounted on casters which are locked and slide along the rough floor (figure 2). The
coefficient of friction between casters and floor equals 0.25. If a 250 N force is applied
(a) What is the acceleration of the cabinet ?
(b) What is the range for values of h for which the cabinet will not tip ?

16. The block A rests on a cart B (figure 3). The coefficient of friction between the cart and the block is 0.3. If A has
a mass 70 kg, investigate the maximum acceleration the cart may have. Explore the two possibilities such that
the block slides or tips off the cart.
