IV. PROCEDURE

DAILY ROUTINE
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
Good morning, students. Good morning, Ma’am.

May I know the names of the students who are

absent. No one, Ma’am.

INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
Before we start our discussion, let us recall our
previous topic.

What is our previous topic again?

All about addition and subtraction of
polynomials ma’am.
Very good!

What are the rules in adding polynomials?

CAC Rules ma’am.
Yes, we use the CAC Rules, what does it stand
for?
Combine like terms.
Add numerical coefficients.
Exactly! How about in subtracting polynomials? Copy the literal coefficient.

CCAC stands for:

Change the sign of the subtrahend.
Combine like terms.
Very good! Add numerical coefficients.
Copy the literal coefficient.
I also believe that you have learned the law of
exponents, right?

What are the laws of exponent?

Yes, Ma’am.

LESSON PROPER
Our topic for today is all about multiplication of
polynomials.

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to be

able to understand the basic rules in multiplying
polynomials and multiply monomial by a
polynomial.

RULES IN MULTIPLYING MONOMIAL

BY A POLYNOMIAL
1. Multiply the monomial to each of the terms in
the polynomial using the laws of exponents.
(Distributive property)
2. Then combine similar terms, if needed.

When multiplying polynomials, you can use

either a horizontal method. However, I suggest
using the vertical method because it is easier to
use, and it is a shorter method than the horizontal.

Let us have examples.

Examples:
1. 3𝑎(5𝑎3 + 2𝑏)
= 3𝑎(5𝑎3 ) + 3𝑎(2𝑏)
= (3)(5)(𝑎1+3 ) + (3)(2)(𝑎𝑏)
= 𝟏𝟓𝒂𝟒 + 𝟔𝒂𝒃

2. −b2 (−2𝑏3 + 9𝑏2 + 2𝑏)

= −b2 (−2𝑏3 ) + −b2 (9𝑏2 ) + −b2 (2b)
= (−1)(−2)(𝑏2+3 ) + (−1)(9)(𝑏2+2 )
+ (−1)(2)(𝑏2+1 )
= (2)(𝑏5 ) + (−9)(𝑏4 ) + (−2)(𝑏3 )

= 𝟐𝒃𝟓 − 𝟗𝒃𝟒 − 𝟐𝒃𝟑

3. 2𝑥(6𝑥 3 − 𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 − 10)
= 2𝑥(6𝑥 3 ) − 2𝑥(𝑥 2 ) + 2𝑥(7𝑥) − 2𝑥(10)
= (2)(6)(𝑥 1+3 ) − (2)(1)(𝑥 1+2)
+ (2)(7)(𝑥 1+1 ) − (2)(10)(𝑥)
= 𝟏𝟐𝒙𝟒 − 𝟐𝒙𝟑 + 𝟏𝟒𝒙𝟐 − 𝟐𝟎𝒙

Vertical:
6𝑥 3 − 𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 − 10
2𝑥
𝟒 𝟑 𝟐
𝟏𝟐𝒙 − 𝟐𝒙 + 𝟏𝟒𝒙 − 𝟐𝟎𝒙

Now, who wants to try these examples?

4. −2𝑚(2𝑚2 + 5𝑚 + 6)
5. −2𝑎𝑏(−𝑎2 𝑏 + 7𝑎𝑏2 − 2𝑎𝑏)

Ma’am!

4.
= −2𝑚(2𝑚2 ) + (−2𝑚(5𝑚))
+ (−2𝑚(6))
= (−2)(2)(𝑚 ) + (−2)(5)(𝑚1+1 )
1+2

+ (−2)(6)(𝑚)
= −𝟒𝒎 + (−𝟏𝟎)𝒎𝟐 + (−𝟏𝟐)𝒎
𝟑

5.
−𝑎2 𝑏 + 7𝑎𝑏2 − 2𝑎𝑏
−2𝑎𝑏
𝟒𝒂 𝒃 − 𝟏𝟒𝒂 𝒃 + 𝟒𝒂𝟐 𝒃𝟐
𝟑 𝟐 𝟐 𝟑

Thank you for answering.

Do you have any questions?

None, ma’am.
Then let’s proceed to multiplying two binomials
using the FOIL method.

The process of multiplying binomials using the

Distributive Property is better known as the FOIL

method. The letters FOIL stand for F(first),

O(outer), I(inner), and L(last). The word FOIL
helps us remember which terms to multiply. To
illustrate.

Multiply. (𝑥 + 4)(𝑥 + 3)

The result is 𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 + 4𝑥 + 12. Combining like

terms, the product of (𝑥 + 4) and (𝑥 + 3) is is
𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 + 12.

Let’s have another example.

Example 2. 𝑀𝑢𝑙𝑡𝑖𝑝𝑙𝑦. (6𝑥 + 5𝑦)(2𝑥 − 3)

Using the FOIL Method:

The result is 𝟏𝟐𝒙𝟐 − 𝟏𝟖𝒙 + 𝟏𝟎𝒙𝒚 − 𝟏𝟓𝒚.

Did you understand, class?

Yes, ma’am.

Very well. I want two volunteers to answer these

two problems on the board.

Try!
𝒂. (𝟔𝒂 − 𝟑𝒃)(𝟐𝒂 − 𝟓𝒃)

𝒃. (𝟐𝒙 + 𝟕𝒚)(−𝟓𝒙 + 𝟒𝒚)

𝒂. (𝟔𝒂 − 𝟑𝒃)(𝟐𝒂 − 𝟓𝒃)
6𝑎 2𝑎) + 6𝑎(−5𝑏) + (−3𝑏)(2𝑎)
(
+ (−3𝑏)(−5𝑏)

12𝑎2 − 30𝑎𝑏 − 6𝑎𝑏 + 15𝑏2

𝟏𝟐𝒂𝟐 − 𝟑𝟔𝒂𝒃 + 𝟏𝟓𝒃𝟐

𝒃. (𝟐𝒙 + 𝟕𝒚)(−𝟓𝒙 + 𝟒𝒚)

2𝑥 (−5𝑥 ) + 2𝑥 (4𝑦) + 7𝑦(−5𝑥 ) + 7𝑦(4𝑦)
−10𝑥 2 + 8𝑥𝑦 − 35𝑥𝑦 + 28𝑦 2
−𝟏𝟎𝒙𝟐 − 𝟐𝟕𝒙𝒚 + 𝟐𝟖𝒚𝟐

We have multiplied monomials by polynomials,

and binomials by binomials. Now we’re ready to
multiply a trinomial by a binomial. Remember,
the FOIL method will not work in this case, but
we can use either the Distributive Property of the
Vertical Method. We first look at an example
using the Distributive Property.

Example 1. 𝑴𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒊𝒑𝒍𝒚 (𝒙 + 𝟑)(𝟐𝒙𝟐 − 𝟓𝒙 + 𝟖)

Distribute.
𝑥 (2𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 + 8) + 3(2𝑥 2 − 5𝑥 + 8)

Multiply.
2𝑥 3 − 5𝑥 2 + 8𝑥 + 6𝑥 2 − 15𝑥 + 24

Combine like terms.

𝟐𝒙𝟑 + 𝒙𝟐 − 𝟕𝒙 + 𝟐𝟒

Example 2. 𝑴𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒊𝒑𝒍𝒚 (𝟑𝒙 + 𝟐)(𝟓𝒙𝟐 − 𝒙 − 𝟒)

Distribute.
3𝑥 (5𝑥 2 − 𝑥 − 4) + 2(5𝑥 2 − 𝑥 − 4)

Multiply.
15𝑥 3 − 3𝑥 2 − 12𝑥 + 10𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 − 8

Combine like terms.

𝟏𝟓𝒙𝟑 + 𝟕𝒙𝟐 − 𝟏𝟒𝒙 − 𝟖

Try!

𝒂. (𝒙 − 𝟓)(𝟔𝒙𝟐 − 𝒙 + 𝟒)

𝒃. (𝟐𝒙 − 𝟏)(𝟑𝒙𝟐 + 𝟒𝒙 − 𝟓)

𝒂. (𝒙 − 𝟓)(𝟔𝒙𝟐 − 𝒙 + 𝟒)
𝑥 (6𝑥 2 − 𝑥 + 4) + (−5)(6𝑥 2 − 𝑥 + 4)
6𝑥 3 − 𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 − 30𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 − 20
𝟔𝒙𝟑 − 𝟑𝟏𝒙𝟐 + 𝟗𝒙 − 𝟐𝟎

𝒃. (𝟐𝒙 − 𝟏)(𝟑𝒙𝟐 + 𝟒𝒙 − 𝟓)
2𝑥 (3𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 − 5) + (−1)(3𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 − 5)
6𝑥 3 + 4𝑥 2 − 10𝑥 − 3𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 5
𝟔𝒙𝟑 + 𝒙𝟐 − 𝟏𝟒𝒙 + 𝟓
I see that you understand very well our lesson for
today, so I guess we’re ending this discussion
here. Thank you, class!
