Q.1] Consider a potential V (x) = 2V0 eV between 0 < x < L, V (x) = 0 eV for x < 0 and V (x) = -(2 - 1)V0 eV for x > L,
2mVo
where ( > 1). An electron of energy V0 eV is incident from left to this potential. Assume k.
2

(a) Express the wave numbers of the probability waves in the regions x < 0, 0 < x < L and x > L in terms of k,  and L
and other relevant quantities.

(b) Find the ratio of the amplitudes between the forward propagating wave in regions x < 0 and x > L.

(c) What are the probability current densities in regions x < 0 and x > L?

(d) Find the transmission probability.

(e) What is the transmission probability for  = 1?

Q. 2] For a quantum particle, suppose its wavefunction is given by

 ( x)  Ax( L  x), x  [0, L] and  ( x)  0, otherwise , where A is some normalization constant. Then,

(a) Qualitatively plot the wavefunction  (x).

(b) Find the uncertainty in the position, x, of a particle corresponding to this wavefunction.

(c) Find the uncertainty in the momentum, p, of the particle in this state.

(d) Find the uncertainity relation, xp, for this state. What is xp in units of ħ/2? Is it ≥1?

Q. 3] Consider a particle confined in a one-dimensional box (which extends from 0 to L). Find the expectation values
for the position and momentum of the particle in a general state n(x) and explain the results.

Q.4] Quantum mechanics is expected to provide the same results as classical physics in the limit of large quantum
numbers. Verify this by calculating the probability of finding the particle in the one-dimensional box between x and
x+x in the limit n  .
