General Information
General Information
For your own protection, please read the section dealing with safety.
Follow the safety instructions carefully in order to avoid endangering
yourself or other persons and to prevent damage to the unit.
These instructions are laid out in a user-oriented manner, which means that
you are led through the operation of the optiPoint 600 office step by step
– from the setup, through descriptions of tools and extensions discussions
of special administrative and service tasks at the end of the manual. For
the operators, a separate manual is provided. The separate quick-reference
guide is meant to provide quick and brief explanations regarding frequently
used functions. The Quick Reference Guide is meant to give you quick and
reliable explanations regarding frequently used functions. The guide for In-
stallation and Startup describes how to connect the components of the
optiPoint 600 office telephone and how to integrate the telephone into a
LAN environment.
Intended Use
The optiPoint 600 office telephone is a desktop unit designed for voice
transmission and for connection to LAN. Any other use is regarded as not
prescribed.
Product Identification
The identification details of your telephone are given on the nameplate
containing the exact product designation and serial number on the bottom
of the base unit. Please have these ready whenever you call our service
department because of trouble with or defects on the unit itself.
5
General Information
Echo Effect
In some cases, while using the telephone you may hear an echo, which
can be quite strong. This is not due to any design defect or other fault with
your IP telephone, but caused by the other client. For example, if the echo
occurs during a teleconference, it may be that the loudspeakers and micro-
phones need to be repositioned.
Service
The Siemens service department can only help you with trouble or
defects on the unit itself.
Should you have any questions regarding the operation, your spe-
cialist retailer or network administrator will gladly help you with the
right answers.
In the case of any trouble or defects on the unit itself, please dial the ser-
vice number of your country.

Character input via the display keypad is useful if there is no external USB
keyboard available.

General Information
Safety
Information that is important for preventing injury or damages is marked
specially, as they are important instructions for correct use of the unit.
This symbol indicates a hazard. Failure to follow the instructions given may
result in injury or in damage to the unit.
Key information important for the proper use of the unit is marked
with this symbol.

telephone.
11
Setting Up the Telephone
If connecting the optiPoint 600 office without using the plug-in pow-
er supply unit only emergency mode will be useable. Further the
LEDs of the function keys as well as the external USB keypad will
be out of operation.
• Feed the cables through the relief on the back of the housing and fix
them by means of the cable clip.
Aprox. 10 sec. after establishing the UP0/E connection the initialization of

Administration
This chapter and the following chapter "Service Docu-
mentation" describe more detailed settings and the ad-
ministration of the optiPoint 600 office. These opera-
tions require good knowledge of network technology as
well as of network protocols, and they are normally car-
ried out by network administrators.
The optiPoint 600 office can be considered as a normal
data terminal within an individual LAN and be managed
as such.
Administration Menu
All settings and administrative tasks are processed via
the menu "Administration". This menu is protected
against illegal accesses by the Administrator password.

Administration
Step by Step
Quality of Service
The QoS Layer 2 is implemented in the Ethernet driver.
The application on the phone sends packets of data (ei-
ther signalling or voice) to the Ethernet driver to be
transmitted on to the network. These packets contain
the QoS Layer 3 information - by default voice packets
are marked as 12 and signalling as 18 but these values
can be set between 0 and 63. The Ethernet driver can-
not determine whether the packets contain voice or sig-
nalling data but it can determine the layer 3 priority. This
priority is used and translated into a layer 2 priority val-
ue. This is done using a look-up table using the layer 3
value as an index into the table. The Ethernet driver has
to be initialised with the look-up table before any pack-
ets are sent onto the network. The loop-up table has
two non-zero values by default for index positions 12
and 18. The default values at these index positions are
6 and 3 respectively but these can be altered to have
values in the range 0 to 7. Prior to transmitting each
packet on the network the Ethernet driver adds the rel-
evant layer 2 priority and Vlan Id value (along with other
layer 2 addressing information) onto the front of the
packet. When such a packet arrives at a busy QoS en-
abled switch it is the layer 2 priority value which deter-
mines whether it jumps ahead of other packets in the
switches queue.
Enter the Administration menu. Access page 17.
3 Select "Configuration".
1 Select "Network settings".
1 Select "Direct LAN access".

Best speech quality is accomplished if G.711 is select-
ed. However, the bandwidth requirement is 80 kb/s in
each direction. If G.723 is selected the speech is com-
pressed which might lead to a lower speech quality.
However, the bandwidth requirement is reduced to
22.4 kb/s in each direction.
