The government may soon force restaurants to introduce a ‘traffic light’ labelling system on

(ADVICE) to eat, while amber foods should be eaten in moderation and red foods eaten occasionally.
Supermarkets already (2) (VOLUNTEER) follow a similar code, but ministers believe a radical

list calorie content on menus, believing this will lead to a dramatic (6) (REDUCE) in the
number of people who are obese or who suffer from diabetes. If the government here goes ahead with
the ‘traffic light’ system, it will no doubt face considerable (7) (RESIST) from the food industry,
which would be forced to spend money on (8) (DATE) menus. This new system would also

“A healthy mind lives in a healthy body” is a saying that is believed to (1) been used by the
ancient Greeks. Thousands of years later, the same idea still applies. According to health experts, it’s
advisable to (2) eight to ten glasses of water every day. However, water itself is not enough; a
balanced diet is essential, too.
A healthy body naturally is the result of doing exercise. Many people, however, do not like gyms and
(3) to going there for different reasons. Some, for instance, say that aerobic sessions are
(4) difficult to follow while others claim that gyms are just too expensive. Many people also
claim that they have difficulty in finding time to exercise due (5) their busy lifestyle, but the
truth is that everyone can make a little time every now and (6) . Regardless of the way people choose
to exercise, it is important to remember that there is no (7) in doing it only for a short period of
time.
Last but not least, having a positive attitude and doing (8) with negative thoughts

mind and body.

1 In some cultures, when you are invited to have meal at someone’s house, you
2 might consider rude if you don’t say how nice the food is. In Britain, for
3 example, it’s normal for someone complimenting the cook on the tastiness of
4 the meal. You can say something like, “That was delicious. Do, please, write
5 down the receipt for me!”. In other culture, however, people tend not to be so
6 full of enthusiasm for the meal. You might be regarded of being rude, as the
7 cook might associate your praise with surprise. He or she might think “So,
8 they’re shocking that I can cook well”. If you’re not sure how to react, the best
9 advice is to wait and look how other people at the table react. If that doesn’t
10 help, be careful about which you say! I would suggest that one solution should
11 been to say, “That was delicious, but then I knew it would be!”

ecological papers (4) from natural banana fibres, for the writing and stationery market.

[0] The quality of Moscow’s streets and squares is very important in the city government’s
development project. Clearly, they need to allow people to move around the city efficiently, but there
must also be places that are simply good to be in. The government uses its powers and resources to
refine and improve Moscow’s network of streets, squares, passageways, arcades and pocket parks to
help make the city more pedestrian-friendly.
[1] The Thames represents a majestic public space that flows through the heart of the city. For
many years, it was dominated by industrial and trading uses, which led to many buildings turning their
backs on the river. In recent decades, de-industrialization has given Londoners an opportunity to
reclaim access to the Thames and to get more space for rest.
[2] A successful public space is a well-used space. No matter how beautiful the design or how
costly the materials are, if people do not use the space, it is not fully contributing to city life. But
public spaces can and should be used in all sorts of different ways, by the widest possible range of
people, by families and children, for picnic and play or for organised activities like markets,
performances, festivals, fetes and marathons.

[3] Creating great local places in Philadelphia is crucial to giving every Philadelphian a decent
quality of life. It also helps to keep and draw in people and businesses, visitors and investment. What
each part of the city has to offer impacts the decisions people take about where to live, work, shop,
spend time, build buildings and start businesses.
[4] Tokyo has a world-class transport system and investing in it helps support the capital’s economy
and quality of life. The authorities are revitalising Tokyo’s buses and spending millions to boost
underground performance by 30 per cent, and supporting elevated trains which will reduce train
journey times across the city. They are also improving Tokyo’s road network to make it safer, cleaner
and more efficient for everyone.
[5] Allowing people on two wheels to share our bus lanes should help to ease congestion on
Sydney’s roads. One of the ways congestion can be improved is by encouraging more people to get on
their bikes, whether pedal or powered, and it is believed that they should be able to share the bus lanes
successfully and safely.
[6] Good health means we can enjoy a fulfilling, rewarding and happy life and we want Sochi to be
a city where everyone has this chance. Helping young people to be fit means encouraging healthy
choices made by them and by the adults in their lives, but it also means making changes to the
environment in Sochi to make those choices easier.
VIII. Read the following passage and write the letter A, B, C or D in the given numbered spaces
to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions. (8 pts)
“Stress: the disease of our times”, “Stress- related illnesses the number one cause of doctors
visits”, “Stress: the silent killer” - it seems like you can’t pick up a newspaper or magazine these days
without seeing a headline about stress and how bad it is for your health. The message is loud and clear:
stress is your enemy, and you should be doing everything you can to minimise it in your daily life.
Is stress really the monster it is made out to be by the media? On the contrary, most experts
believe there is nothing wrong with experiencing a little bit of stress from time to time. As physiologist
Monika Fleshner states, “Only under circumstances of chronic stress do we suffer its negative effects.”
This type of stress comes when we face a situation that feels inescapable or takes a heavy toll on us a
stressful job or an unhappy home life, for example. On the other hand, experiencing mild stress,
according to Fleshner, can even be good for us.
When we feel stressed, glands in the body secrete hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol
which serve a number of functions. For one, they make the heart beat faster thereby increasing blood
flow to the brain and muscles and making us ready for action. As psychiatrist Judith Orloff states,
“Stress energises us, speeding up our systems to handle what we have to handle.” Accordingly, stress
is not a problem, as it is usually perceived, but actually a condition that humans have evolved over
thousands of years to deal with problems!
Stress does not only have benefits in the short term. Recent research suggests that regularly
experiencing short periods of mild stress can strengthen the body’s immune system and lower the risk
or neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s. In effect, stress acts like a ‘workout’ for the brain. Just
like exercising a muscle in the gym, stress exercises the brain, ensuring it stays healthy and fully
functional.
It’s also worth thinking about the consequences of stress. Psychologists distinguish between
two main types of stress: distress and eustress. Basically, distress is negative stress. Even considering
the positive effects mentioned above, distress, more often than not, makes us feel disheartened.
Eustress, on the other hand, is the positive stress that results in us feeling happy. Take physical
exercise, for example. It is undoubtedly stressful to push your body to the limit, but the health benefits
and feeling of accomplishment afterwards by far makes the initial stress worth it.

Trang
6/8
So why, you may be asking yourself, if eustress and even low levels of distress are beneficial,
are we being continually fed the message that every type of stress is our enemy? According to Angela
Padmore, author of The Truth about Stress, the answer lies with the multimillion-pound stress
management industry. According to Padmore, the vast majority of us do not feel stress to the point
where we need to buy products or seek professional assistance. Yet in Britain alone, there are now
over 15 million websites and 2 million Stress Management Practitioners selling everything from
hormone test sets to massage balls, all treating a condition that to a large extent does not need to be
treated. People are made to think they have a problem so that they will hand over their hard-earned
cash for the cure. As one experienced counsellor put it: “They’ve turned a normal part of living into a
disease that needs to be cured.”
So, how can we apply this information to our everyday lives? Well, firstly, it’s important to
recognise the difference between chronic stress and mild stress. If you are suffering from the former,
get help today. On the other hand, the next time that you feel mild stress, try to embrace the sensation.
Don’t get stressed about feeling stress; chances are it’s doing you a lot of good.
