Forces - Problem Solving Practice

Solve problems on a separate sheet of paper

1. George is participating in a rock lifting contest. The 68 kg rock starts at rest on the ground. If
George exerts a 720 N force on the rock, what is the acceleration of the rock as he lifts it off the
ground?

2. The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney World is not really a free fall ride; the ride vehicle
actually pulls riders downwards with an acceleration greater than 9.8 m/s2 . If the acceleration of the
elevator is 13 m/s2 , what is the force that the cables must exert on the ride vehicle? You estimate that
the ride vehicle has a mass of 2500 kg when fully loaded with passengers.

3. A shot-putter exerts a net force of 140 N on a shot. What is the mass of the shot if the shot
accelerates at 19 m/s2?

4. An astronaut, while pushing a beam into place on the International Space Station, exerted a force
on the 1,000 kg beam. The beam accelerates at 0.15 m/s. Determine the force exerted on the beam.

5. The maximum force that a grocery bag can withstand without ripping is 250 N. Suppose that the
bag is filled with 20.0 kg of groceries and lifted with an acceleration of 5.0 m/s2. Do the groceries stay
in the bag?

6. What net force is required to bring a 1500 kg car from rest from a speed of 28 m/s over a time of 22
seconds?
Draw a force diagram on the car:

7. A crate of mass 50 kg is at rest on a horizontal floor.

Draw a force diagram on the crate:

a. What is the magnitude of the net force acting on the crate?

b. What is the weight of the crate?
c. What is the magnitude of the Normal Force?
d. Someone then pushes the crate with 430 N to the right. If the coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.2,
what will the horizontal acceleration of the crate be?

8. Two forces are exerted on an object in the vertical direction: a 20 N force downward and a 10 N
force upward. The mass of the object is 25 kg.
a. What do you know about the motion of this object?

b. Represent the forces with a free body diagram.

c. Write Newton’s second law in component form and solve for acceleration.

9. An applied force of 20 N is used to accelerate an object to the right across a frictional surface. The
object encounters 10 N of friction. The mass of the object is 10 kg. Determine the normal force, the
net force, the coefficient of friction (μ) between the object and the surface, and the acceleration of the
object. (Neglect air resistance.)

10. Two small balls of the same material, one of mass m and the other of mass 2m , are dropped
simultaneously from the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Earth exerts a bigger force:
a. On the 2m ball.
b. On the m ball.
c. Earth exerts same force on both balls because they fall with the same acceleration.

CHALLENGE (Questions 11, 12)

11. In a grocery store, you push a 14.5 kg shopping cart. It is initially rolling at a constant speed of 2.0
m/s. You push on it in the direction opposite to its motion exerting a force of 12.0 N. (Ignore friction for
all parts of this problem.)

a. Draw a free body diagram for the cart when you start pushing in the direction opposite to its
motion.

b. Write Newton’s second law in component form for the process.

c. Assuming you push the cart exerting constant force for a while, how far will it travel in 3
seconds?

12. You hang a picture using two ropes, each at an angle of 30° with the vertical.

a. Draw a sketch of the situation.

b. Draw a force diagram for the picture.

c. If the mass of the picture is 5 kg, what is the force that each rope must exert on the picture to
keep it stable?

d. How can you use trigonometry to solve the problem?
