MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERN WORLD

3 topics and construct your own problem:

● 1 for Age Word Problem
● 1 for Mixture Problem
● 1 for Distance, Rate and Time Problem

AGE WORD PROBLEM:

Emma is twice as old as her brother John and four years. The sum of their age will be 40. How
old are Emma and John now?

Emma John

Present E J

Future E+4 J+4

Emma John

Present 2E J

Future 2E+ 4 J+4

Solution

(J + 4) + (2J+4) = 40

3J + 8 = 40
-8 -8

3J = 32
/3 /3

J= 10.6years old (Johns age) 2J= 2 x 10.6

= 21.3 years old (Emma’s age)

FINAL ANSWER:
Johns age= 10.6 years old
Emma age= 21.3 years old

MIXTURE PROBLEM:

150 L of a 25% alcohol solution is mixed with 450 L of a 55% alcohol solution. What is the
concentration of the alcohol in the resulting mixture?

Solution:

V3= V1 + V2= 150 + 450 = 600L

(25%) (150L) + ( 55%) (450L) = C3 (600)

3,750 + 24,750 = 600 C3
28,500 = 600 C3
/600 /600

FINAL ANSWER: 47.5%= C3

DISTANCE, RATE AND TIME PROBLEMS:

Two cyclists start from two towns that are 180 miles apart and head towards each other. Cyclist
A is traveling at 30 mph, and Cyclist B is traveling at 50 mph. How many hours will it take for
them to meet?

Solution
CA + CB = 180 miles
30T + 50T = 180

80T = 180
/80 /80

FINAL ANSWER: T= 2.25 hours or 2 hours and 15 minutes

After answering your own formulated problems. The following questions should be
answered.
1. How did you formulate your own problem from the 3 topics mentioned?

I watched the videos to see an example and so I can learn how to solve it.

2. How did you determine that your own constructed problem is aligned in the 3 topics
mentioned?

I made sure my questions were similar to the examples because I know they align with the
topic.

3. What do you think of the level of difficulty you encountered upon constructing the
problem?

I would rate it a 7/10 because it was a little difficult for me to understand, but with the help of the
video, I solved my problem.

4. How did you arrive at your answers?

I followed the steps in the video.

5. Enumerate the steps you follow upon answering your constructed problems.

1. I watched the video

2. practiced on my own
3. thought of a different question with different numbers and people, but same topic
4. followed the steps in the videos
5. answered my questions
