CHAPTER l
This chapter presents the background of the study, statement of the problema,
significance of the study, scope in delimitation of the study, and definition of terms.
It provides students with knowledge, skills, and competence, while also fostering
personal growth, confidence, and self-esteem, and offering opportunities for career
While smartphone have become an integral part of our daily lives. Despite the numerous
benefits they provide to student, such as improved communication and information management, there
are also concern about their potential negative effects on academic performance. The excessive use of
smartphone has been linked to decrease attention span, decrease motivation, and decrease cognitive
abilities (kiraly at al., 2019).
The age of students is an important factor to consider when examining the impact of smartphones on
academic performance. Research has shown that younger students are more likely to be influenced by
the social media platforms they use, and may be more prone to distract and decrease attention span (Liu
er., 2017). On the other hand, older students may be more likely to use their smartphones for
productivity and organization, which can have a positive impact on their academic performance.
Gender is also an important factor consider. Research has shown that girls are more likely to use their
smartphones for social media and commutation, while boys are more likely to use them for gaming and
entertainment (Gentle eto al., 2014). This can have different implications for their academic
performance.
Time management and study practice are also important factors to consider. Research has shown that
students who are also able to manage their time effectively and develop good study habits are more
likely to achieve academic performance success (kuhl et al., 2016).
The use of smartphone can either support on hinder these practices, depending on how they use. The
fucos of this study is to explore the influence of smartphone on the academic performance of GAS 11
students at Mahardika Institute of Technology, especially in relation to age, gender, time management,
and study practice.
This study aims to examine the influence of age, gender, time management, and study practice on
relationship between smartphone use and academic performance of GAS 11 students at Mahardika
Institute of Technology (MIT SHS.)
1.1 Age
1.2 Genger
Null Hypothesis
1.1 Age
1.2 Gender
Ho1: There is no significant variation in the academic performance of GAS 11 students at MIT SHS when
categorized by age.
Ho2: There is no significant variation in the academic performance of GAS 11 students at MIT SHS when
categorized by gender.
Ho3: Smartphone usage does not significantly effect the time management practices of GAS 11 students
at MIT SHS.
Ho4: Smartphone usage does not significantly influence the study of GAS 11 students at MIT SHS.
3. Is there any significant relationship between the demographic profile and the impact of smartphones
on academic performance of students?
Ho5: There is no significant relationship the demographic profile (age and gender) of GAS 11 students at
MIT SHS and the impact of smartphones on their academic performance.
School
This study provide insights for schools to develop affective policies and strategies for managing
smartphone use among students.
Teachers
This study inform teachers on how to adopt their teaching methods to accommodate students
smartphone use and improve academic performance.
Parents
This study will help parents understand the impact of smartphone use on their children's academic
performance and make informed decision about their use.
Future Researchers
Contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the relationship between smartphone use and
academic performance, benefiting future researchers and policymakers.
This study is focused on the influences of smartphones usage on the academic performance of GAS 11
students at Mahardika Institute of Technology (MIT SHS).
It specifically examine how demographic factors ( age and gender), time management, and study
practice related to smartphone use affect students academic outcomes. The research will use checking
list and fucos groups to gather in depth insights into student experiences.
Additionally, this study is limited to GAS 11 students at MIT SHS, excluding other programs, academic
year's, and institutions. The data collection will occur during the academic year 2024, focusing on short-
term impact rather than long-term effects. Resource constraints, including time and access to
participants, may also impact the scope anfld depth of the research.
Definition of Terms
For the better understanding of this study, the following terms are operationally defined;
Smartphones: Mobile devices with internet access and multifunctional capabilities used by students
communication, social networking, and academic purposes.
Influence: The effect of smartphone use has on the academic performance of GAS 11 students at MIT.
GAS 11 Students: Individuals enrolled in the General Academic Strand program at Mahardika Institute of
Technology for the school year 2024-2025.
