Field Device Manager

The Honeywell Field Device Manager (FDM) is a comprehensive solution for managing all smart devices based
on the HART® protocol.

FDM provides plant instrument technicians and maintenance A Smart, HART-Based Solution for
personnel with an optimized environment that simplifies Field Device Management
typical tasks associated with smart instruments, such as: FDM supports the following:
• Configuration • Vendor-created, unmodified DD files, without the
• Diagnostics requirement for additional files or special software

• Maintenance • DD files registered with HCF

configure and support all device-specific parameters and
methods for any HART device.

FDM’s HART host capabilities are based on the HART

Communication Foundation’s (HCF) SDC 625 standard
HART host and DD IDE products. FDM comes preloaded
with all the latest DD files available from HCF. FDM can also
work without a DD, and provides access to all common
HART features.

A Robust, Secure, Flexible Architecture

The powerful FDM client-server architecture helps
maintenance personnel distribute client and communication
interfaces, such as multiplexer networks, across the plant.

eliminating the need for expensive RS 485 wiring design and
its associated costs.

An Integrated Design FDM Simplifies Maintenance Tasks

FDM integrates tightly with HART-enabled I/O modules built FDM simplifies common maintenance tasks by providing

devices can be integrated from FDM into Experion, making it
possible to migrate to Experion from an older system while
retaining the existing instrumentation and benefiting from the
value of smart instrumentation. FDM’s powerful export-
import capabilities make migration of existing databases
simple and less intensive.

A Flexible, Secure Environment

FDM also provides a secure environment where user access
is password and login-protected. FDM’s flexible role-based
security environment allows system administrators to
redefine existing user roles, or create new user roles and
privileges according to each plant’s specific procedures.

FDM also supports the use of direct-connected HART
modems for benchtop configuration tasks.

FDM Saves Time

With FDM, no point engineering or database building is
required. Simply configure the communication parameters
and FDM automatically:

• Detects device assets and adds them to the database

• Uses information accessed from the actual, connected

HART device to establish the database record and
automatically assigns the proper template

• Saves time by eliminating the need to build templates

and assign them to devices

FDM simplifies startup by providing an easy-to-use interface

for common tasks. Wizard-like menu-driven steps guide you
through common tasks like loop tests, calibration procedures
and range updates. FDM presents powerful and complex
features like valve stroke tests of control valves, flow
diagnostics, or drift analysis with the same ease as common
tasks like loop tests or calibration procedures.

Detailed Device Status Screens Aid Maintenance

FDM automatically historizes data, allowing maintenance
personnel to compare:

• Configuration of one device with another device, or

• Historical configuration of the same device or

another device.

In addition, FDM provides other features that aid

maintenance, including management of spares and

calibration tracking.

The FDM Offline Configuration feature allows you to

complete the configuration of all devices offline without the
device being physically present and lets you download the
configuration at the push of a button.

Maximize the Benefits of Smart Instrumentation

FDM offers businesses these key benefits:

• Versatility--Supports all parameters and methods

supported by smart instruments.

• Accessibility--Provides full access to device

parameters, configuration and diagnosis procedures.

• Predictability—Don’t wait for a service call to

determine what problem exists or how to fix it. FDM
helps predict problems prior to them occurring, by
unlocking the power within smart instrumentation and Comparison of device configurations

making it available to plant personnel.

Maintenance technicians use FDM to take ownership of a

smart device once initial setup and startup is complete. FDM
helps maintenance technicians to:

• Support all related configuration, calibration and

maintenance/diagnostics procedures

• Perform device diagnostics, debugging, range changes

or configuration changes due to device replacements or
process changes

Operators seldom perform device configuration or

calibration tasks, but in some cases they may be responsible
