Electron Beam Machining

Electron beam machining is well known method which uses high voltage to generate electron beam.
It is used for various operations by converting the kinetic energy of electrons to the thermal energy.
In previous times magnetic lens are used to focus the electron beam and magnetic coils are for
deflecting them. Desk top EBM system is nowadays used for micro machining. Construction of EBM
system is systamatic in a such a way that every department is in a manner.

In 1952, EBM was first introduced where electron beam was generated through thermionic cathode
emitters. But they had short life span. In 1907, an effort was also made where concave cathodes
were used to generate electron source. Hollow cathodes were also studied. Conventional hot
cathode electron beam welding (EBM) equipment requires the use of magnetic lenses and deflection
coils to adjust the intensity of the electric beam. These machines need a lot of electrical equipment,
a good vacuum cleaner, an expensive vacuum cleaner and high voltage equipment. These systems
are very expensive and limited to small transactions. The low-cost EBM desktop is designed for micro
parts welding and surface modification, including air pressure, electronic components and focal
points. This low-cost desktop CPA is expected to have many applications in micromachining in the
future.

Beam source is of aluminium with diameter and height of 18 mm and 20 mm respectively. Two
surface design one is concave surface and other is 3mm cavity with drilling holes and diameter of
13mm. Curvature of aluminium cathode used to focus the electron beam. Ceramic tube is the
coverage of cathode tube. Desk top EBM is consisting of vacuum chamber with covering of thick glass
plate. Argon was applied as working gas for to avoid chemical reaction between residual gases and
the work piece. Inert gas ensures the welding quality. Microwave ovens used for power supply.
Voltage double rectifier used for doubling and smoothening of high voltage power source. Desk Top
EB system can be used for micro part welding because power source applies low energy and can be
used for low melting point materials.

The given working parameters are gap between cathode and anode. Working pressure is also given
which can be regulated to eliminate the adverse arc discharge when working pressure is too high.
Cathode dark space and negative column of discharge is increased when working pressure is
decreased as well as cathode supply is increase. Modification of the electric current line requires
adjustment of the cathode voltage and operating gas pressure. Correct correction is required for
voltages below 3 kV. The desktop EBM machine uses a constant flow of argon gas up to 0.081 Torr,
which causes the beam to vary. The discharge occurs under abnormal flash conditions, making it
difficult to obtain further predictions and repeatability of results.
It is used for small part drilling and dissimilar material welding. Can be used for material having high
thermal conductivity.
