ABSTRACT

A group discussion is an informal discussion in which people of similar educational levels


discuss a current issue of interest.A debate is a discussion or structured contest about an issue
or a resolution.Purpose of GD is to access the managerial attributes of the candidates on
parameters like communication skills,leadership skills,rational thought process,analytical and
rational thinking.

A debate topic is presented either by writing on a blackboard or stated verbally by a person


called moderator or coordinator.A topic of relevance will be given and they will be allowed to
think about the topic for 5 minutes.Skills required for a GD include communication ability,
team skills,analytical skills,awareness or general knowledge on political, social, economic,
business etc.The four components generally evaluated in a group discussion are knowledge,
communication skills,group behaviour,leadership potential.

Dos and Don’ts of GD :


Do’s: Be clear about thoughts,believe firmly on what to say,be concise on your thought
delivery,state statistics to support your viewpoint,try to summarise.
Don’ts: Be too humorous,speak for long,use too many examples to support your views,bluff
statistics

Activities to improve GD skills include conduct mock GDs,read editorials of leading


newspapers,watch news discussions on BBC,stay updated about hot topics.Since, teamwork
is an essential element of business management and corporate work-sphere, a person’s ability
to perform well in a GD is very critical for a successful career.
A GD helps to achieve group goals as well as individual goals. It is basically a situation test
wherein a sample of a candidate’s group worthiness and potential as a worker comes out quite
explicitly.

INTRODUCTION TO GROUP DISCUSSION

A group discussion is an informal discussion in which people of similar educational levels


discuss a current issue of interest.It's also known as a discussion without a leader.The
objective of GD is to determine the candidates' inherent leadership level.
Group Discussion is a modern method of assessing students personality.It is both a technique
and an art and a comprehensive tool to judge the worthiness of the student and his
appropriateness for the job.
Nowadays Group Discussion is being extensively used along with personal interviews for the
final selection of candidates. It plays a main role in selecting the best among the best. It refers
to the situation where a particular number of people (three to eight) meet face to face and
through free oral interaction, originate, share and discuss ideas to arrive at a decision or
solution to a problem. Group discussions are used for decision-making and problem solving.
They are also used widely as a personality test for evaluating several candidates
simultaneously.The more your ideas and the more your knowledge of the subject, the more
interested, enthusiastic and confident you would become and the more fluent and forceful
would be your speech and contribution to the discussion.

● Group discussions as a part of a selection process.

Purpose of GD:

Conducted to access the managerial attributes of the candidates on parameters like:

Structure of a GD:

The group sits in circle or U-shape.They may either be given their choice of seat or seat
allotted.During a GD employers evaluate potential for leadership and ability to work in a
team.

The four components generally evaluated in a group discussion are:


1. Knowledge
2. Communication skills
3. Group behaviour
4. Leadership potential

Candidate assessed in terms of:

Active listening,clarity of thought and expression,apt language,body language etc.


Tone: Quality or character of the voice expression a particular feeling or mood
Voice: Power of speech
Articulation: Act of speaking or expressing an idea in words
Fluency: Speaking or writing in an easy, flowing style
Modulation: Variations in rate, tone, or volume of voice
Good delivery: The ideas expressed fluently in the right voice, right tone, and right
articulation.It isn’t sufficient to have ideas. They have to be expressed effectively.

DOs :

DEBATE

A debate is a discussion or structured contest about an issue or a resolution.In a formal


debate, there are usually three groups involved:

● supporting a resolution (affirmative team)


● opposing the resolution (opposing team)
● judging the quality of the evidence and arguments as well as the debate performance.

The affirmative and opposing teams usually consist of three members each, while the judging
may be done by the teacher, a small group of students, or the class as a whole. In addition to
the three specific groups, there may be an audience made up of class members not involved
in the formal debate. A specific resolution is developed and rules for the debate are
established.

GD V/S DEBATE

The goal is to gain a better understanding. The goal is to figure out which side is more
convincing.

There are fewer rules and less formality. More formal with more guidelines.

CONCLUSION

Since teamwork is an essential element of business management and corporate work-sphere,


a person’s ability to perform well in a GD is very critical for a successful career.
