What is Docker?

Docker is a popular containerization platform that makes it easy to develop,


package, and deploy applications as containers. It provides a set of tools
and a platform for creating and managing containers.
Architecture of Docker

Docker is an open-source software platform. It is designed to make it easier


to create, deploy, and run applications by using containers. Containers
allow a developer to package up an application with all of the parts which
are required, such as libraries and other dependencies and ship it all out as
one package.

Docker Components
These are the Docker Components:
1. DOCKER CLIENT The Docker client enables users to interact with
Docker. Docker runs in a client-server architecture that means the docker
client can connect to the docker host locally or remotely.
Docker client and host (daemon) can run on the same host or can run on
different hosts and communicate through sockets or a RESTful API.
The Docker client is the primary way that many Docker users interact with
Docker. When we use commands such as docker run, the client sendsthese
commands to docker daemon, which carries them out. The docker command
uses the Docker API. The Docker client can communicate with more than one
daemon. We can communicate with the docker client using the Docker CLI.
We have some commands through which we can communicate with the
Docker client. Then the docker client passes those commands to the Docker
daemon. docker build ... docker run ... docker push ..etc.

2. DockerHost The Docker host provides a complete environment to


execute and run applications. It includesDocker daemon, Images,
Containers, Networks, and Storage.
a) Docker Daemon Docker Daemon is a persistent background process that
manages Docker images, containers, networks, and storage volumes. The
Docker daemon constantly listens for Docker API requests and processes
them.
b) Docker Images: Docker-images are a read-only binary template used to
build containers. Images also contain metadata that describe the
container’s capabilities and needs.

● Push the docker image to the public registry like DockerHub using the
docker push command. After pushing we can access these images
from anywhere using docker pull command.
An image can be used to build a container. Container images can be shared
across teams within an enterprise using a private container registry, or
shared with the world using a public registry like Docker Hub.

c) Docker Containers: A container is a runnable instance of an image. We can


create, start, stop, move, or delete a container using the Docker API or CLI.
We can connect a container to one or more networks,attach storage to it, or
even create a new image based on its current state.
d) Docker Networking Through the docker networking, we can communicate
from one container to other containers. By default, we get three different
networks on the installation of Docker – none, bridge, and host. The none
and host networks are part of the network stack in Docker. The bridge
network automatically creates a gateway and
IP subnet and all containers that belong to this network can talk to each
other via IP addressing.
e) Docker Storage A container is volatile it means whenever we remove or
kill the container then all of its data will be lost from it. If we want to
persist the container data use the docker storage concept. We can store
data within the writable layer of a container but it requires a storage
driver. In Terms of persistent storage, Docker offers the following options:

3. Docker Registries Docker-registries are services that provide locations


from where we can store and download images.
A Docker registry contains repositories that host one or more Docker
Images. Public Registries include Docker Hub and Docker Cloud and private
Registries can also be used. We can also create our own private registry.

Orchestration ensures that containers are deployed and managed efficiently
and reliably in a distributed environment.

An orchestration engine is the software component responsible for automating


and
coordinating the deployment and management of containers within a
container cluster. It acts as a central control system that handles tasks like
scheduling containers to run on specific hosts, scaling containers up or
down based on load, managing networking between containers, and
maintaining high availability.

There are several orchestration tools available to help with container


orchestration. Some of the most popular ones include:

Kubernetes: Kubernetes is the most widely used container orchestration tool. It


provides a powerful and flexible platform for managing containers, scaling
applications, and handling resource allocation, among other tasks. It has a
large and active community and is backed by the Cloud Native Computing
Foundation (CNCF).

Docker Swarm: Docker Swarm is a native orchestration tool for Docker


containers. It is designed to be simple and easy to set up, making it a good
choice for smaller deployments.

Apache Mesos: Apache Mesos is a general-purpose cluster manager that


can be used for container orchestration. It provides resource management
and scheduling capabilities for running containers alongside other
workloads.

Amazon ECS (Elastic Container Service): Amazon ECS is a managed container


orchestration service provided by AWS. It simplifies the process of deploying
and managing containers in the AWS cloud environment.

OpenShift: OpenShift is an enterprise Kubernetes platform offered by Red


Hat. It adds additional features and tools on top of Kubernetes to make it
more suitable for
enterprise deployments.
Nomad: Nomad is an orchestration tool developed by HashiCorp. It's
designed to be lightweight and is particularly well-suited for job scheduling
and management.

● For every pod that the scheduler discovers, the scheduler becomes
responsible for finding best node for that pod to run
● Scheduler gets the information for hardware configuration from
configuration files and schedules the pods on nodes accordingly

Blue-Green Deployment is a deployment strategy that involves maintaining two

a. In the Blue-Green Deployment setup, the Blue environment is currently live


and serving user traffic.

b. The new version of the application is deployed in the Green


environment, but it remains inactive.

c. After deploying and thoroughly testing the new version in the Green
environment, you switch the traffic from the Blue environment to the Green
environment. This means that users start interacting with the new version.

d. If any issues or problems arise after the switch, you can quickly revert
back to the Blue environment, which still contains the previous version.

Blue-Green Deployment offers several advantages, including minimal


downtime, easy rollback in case of issues, and a high degree of safety for
deploying new releases.
Canary Deployment:
Canary Deployment is a deployment strategy where you roll out a new version
of your application to a small subset of users or servers before making it
available to your entire user base. The term "canary" comes from the practice
of using canaries in coal mines to detect toxic gasses. Similarly, you release
the new version to a small group of users as a "canary" to detect potential
issues before a wider release. Here's how it typically works:

a. A small percentage of users (the canary group) or a subset of servers


starts using the new version of the application.

b. You monitor these users or servers closely to detect any errors,


performance issues, or other problems.

c. If no significant issues arise, you gradually increase the percentage


of users or servers using the new version until it's deployed to the
entire user base.

Canary Deployment allows you to catch issues early and reduce the
impact of any potential problems by limiting the exposure of the new
version initially. It's especially useful when you want to test a new release
in a real-world environment without
affecting all users at once.

Both Blue-Green Deployment and Canary Deployment are effective strategies for
minimizing deployment risks and ensuring a smooth transition to new versions of
your application. The choice between them depends on your specific requirements,
infrastructure, and the level of control you need over the deployment process.
