My experience, emotions, opinions
Through my experience and contact with Portuguese culture, I've gained a comprehensive
understanding of various facets that contribute to the rich tapestry of this vibrant nation. Let me
reflect on what I've learned from delving into Portugal's history, exploring emigration through a
movie, immersing myself in the unique traditions of Praxe Académica and Tunas, and savoring
the delicious world of Portuguese cuisine.
The most what I like on our course is walking in the city center. Despite the initial
challenges of rain and delays, my journey to Porto turned into a memorable adventure.
Embracing the rain, I explored the city's historic sites with newfound friends. Despite getting
wet, the experience became a bonding opportunity, making our visit to iconic places like Serra
do Pilar and Mosteiro do Pilar even more special. The rain enhanced the city's charm, creating
lasting memories of camaraderie and resilience. In the end, the rain became a symbol of
resilience and camaraderie, making our adventure in Porto all the more memorable. As we
gathered to enjoy a meal together, our spirits remained undampened, and the evening concluded
on a note of warmth and friendship. Porto, with its rain-kissed charm, had woven its magic,
leaving us with cherished memories of a truly extraordinary experience.
Discovering Portugal's history has been like embarking on a captivating journey through
time. From the Age of Discoveries to the complexities of the Portuguese Empire and the
transition to democracy in the 20th century, each era has shaped the country's identity in
profound ways. This historical context has provided me with a deeper appreciation for Portugal's
evolution and cultural influences.
Furthermore watching a movie centered on Portuguese emigration has been a poignant
experience. It brought to life the personal stories of individuals navigating the challenges of
leaving their homeland. This cinematic exploration has humanized the broader historical and
economic factors that drive emigration, offering a glimpse into the lives of those who embark on
such journeys.
In addition to that, participating in and understanding Praxe Académica has given me a
unique perspective on academic life in Portugal. The rituals, traditions, and camaraderie
associated with higher education here are unlike anything I've encountered elsewhere. From
initiation rituals to academic dress codes, these customs contribute significantly to the cultural
fabric of Portuguese universities.
I can`t but mention about event called Tunas. Involvement with Tunas has added a
musical and artistic dimension to my experience with Portuguese culture. These university-
associated musical groups showcase the intersection of tradition and creativity. The tunas'
performances, often featuring traditional music, have provided a soundtrack to my exploration of
academic life and cultural expression in Portugal. After main event I loved when me and my
friends went to bar to drink something and communicate with guys from Tunas to find out more
information about their organization. Also it was incredible opportunity to meet new people.

In essence, my experience with Portuguese culture has been a holistic and immersive
exploration, revealing the intricate layers of history, personal narratives, academic traditions, and
culinary delights that collectively define this captivating nation

My immersion in Portuguese culture has proven to be an invaluable experience, offering

multifaceted benefits that extend beyond personal enrichment to encompass both my academic
field and the prospect of returning home. From delving into the historical tapestry of Portugal to
engaging with the intricacies of daily life, the impact of this cultural exploration is far-reaching.
In the realm of academia, the exposure to Portuguese history provides a nuanced
understanding that proves particularly beneficial for fields such as international relations, history,
and cultural studies. The knowledge gained extends beyond textbooks, offering insights into
societal dynamics, cultural intricacies, and the evolution of a nation. This depth of understanding
is a valuable asset, fostering a comprehensive grasp of global contexts that can enhance the
quality and relevance of academic work.
Furthermore, the firsthand experience with Praxe Académica and Tunas introduces a
unique perspective on academic life. These traditions, rituals, and musical expressions contribute
not only to the cultural fabric of Portuguese universities but also open avenues for potential
research opportunities. The intersection of academia and culture provides a rich landscape for
academic exploration, enabling the integration of cultural dimensions into scholarly pursuits.
Language proficiency cultivated through daily interactions and engagement with
Portuguese society is a tangible asset for those whose academic pursuits involve the Portuguese
language. This linguistic competence not only facilitates communication but also broadens the
scope of research possibilities and collaborations.
Upon returning home, the benefits of this cultural immersion become even more
apparent. The cross-cultural competence developed during my time in Portugal is a transferable
skill with relevance in various professional settings. Navigating diverse environments,
understanding different perspectives, and adapting to unfamiliar situations are invaluable assets
in today's interconnected world.
The networking opportunities forged during my stay in Portugal create a foundation for
future collaborations, job prospects, and professional relationships. These connections, whether
academic or social, serve as a bridge between cultures and offer a unique advantage in an
increasingly globalized professional landscape.
Moreover, the experience contributes to enhanced problem-solving skills and resilience.
Overcoming challenges in an unfamiliar environment fosters adaptability and a capacity to thrive
in diverse situations. This personal growth extends beyond the academic realm, influencing
decision-making, and problem-solving in various aspects of life.
In essence, my contact with Portuguese culture has become a transformative journey,
intertwining academic enrichment with personal and professional development. The impact is
not confined to the present moment but extends its influence, shaping the trajectory of my

academic pursuits and contributing to a broader, more interconnected worldview as I navigate
the challenges and opportunities that await me upon returning home.
Studying At Catolica University I observed some differences in teaching methods.
Engaging in academic pursuits across universities from different countries reveals a diverse
landscape of educational experiences that distinctly differ from the academic milieu in Portugal.
These variations encompass not only the methodologies employed in teaching but also the
cultural nuances that shape the overall approach to learning and academic life.
The pedagogical approaches adopted by universities in different countries often exhibit
unique characteristics. While Portuguese universities may emphasize interactive lectures,
seminars, and group discussions, counterparts abroad might incorporate a greater emphasis on
independent research, practical applications, or collaborative projects. These distinctions
contribute to varying educational methodologies that expose students to diverse learning
environments.
Cultural nuances play a pivotal role in shaping the educational experience. The teaching
styles, assessment methods, and even the student-teacher dynamics differ significantly. For
instance, in some countries, there might be a stronger focus on student participation and open
dialogue in classrooms, contrasting with more structured lecture-based systems found in
Portugal. Understanding and adapting to these cultural subtleties become integral aspects of
navigating academic life abroad.
Universities in different countries often place varying degrees of emphasis on research
and innovation. Some institutions may prioritize cutting-edge research, encouraging students to
actively engage in research projects, while others may have a more structured curriculum with a
focus on theoretical knowledge. The extent to which universities integrate research into the
academic journey can profoundly influence the depth and breadth of a student's educational
experience.
The spectrum of extracurricular activities and campus life can diverge significantly
across international universities. While Portuguese universities may offer a specific array of
cultural and sports activities, universities abroad have a broader range, reflecting the diversity of
their student body. This variation extends to campus facilities, clubs, and organizations, shaping
the holistic experience beyond academic realms.
The methods used for student assessment also differ noticeably. Some countries prefer
continuous assessment through coursework, presentations, and class participation, while others
may rely more heavily on final exams. Adaptability to diverse assessment methodologies
becomes crucial for students navigating academic systems outside Portugal.

I would like to mention that completing the "Introduction to Portuguese Culture" course
has been an eye-opening journey that significantly broadened my perspective on Portugal.
Exploring the historical foundations, art, music, cuisine, and traditions offered a holistic
understanding of the nation's rich cultural tapestry. Delving into Portugal's history, I gained
insights into its early civilizations, the Age of Discoveries, and the cultural influences that
shaped its identity. The modules on art and architecture showcased the visual beauty of the
country, while music and dance introduced me to the emotive world of Fado and regional folk
forms.
The literary exploration unveiled the soul of Portugal through the works of key figures,
and the culinary section tantalized my taste buds with the richness of Portuguese gastronomy.
Festivals, traditions, and contemporary culture provided a dynamic perspective on how
Portugal's cultural legacy continues to thrive. Overall, this course not only enriched my cultural
knowledge but also sparked a deeper appreciation for Portugal's history and heritage. It's been a
transformative experience that leaves me with a more profound understanding of this vibrant and
diverse culture
Also this course has prompted profound reflections as a Ukrainian, offering insights into
the intricate tapestry of Portugal's history, arts, and traditions. The parallels and contrasts
between the Portuguese cultural narrative and Ukraine's own rich heritage evoke contemplation
on several fronts.
Firstly, the emphasis on cultural exchange and understanding in the course resonates with
the diverse cultural landscape of Ukraine. Recognizing the value of cross-cultural appreciation
becomes a lens through which to view Ukraine's own unique history and traditions, fostering a
deeper understanding of the importance of preserving and celebrating its cultural identity.
The preservation of cultural heritage emerges as a shared concern. Portugal's commitment
to safeguarding its historical and artistic treasures prompts contemplation on Ukraine's efforts to
preserve its own rich tapestry, from ancient traditions to the Ukrainian language itself. The
course sparks thoughts on the challenges and opportunities in maintaining cultural authenticity in
the face of modernization and globalization.
As decisions in the course of the narrative are considered, parallels may be drawn to
decisions at both individual and societal levels in Ukraine. Contemplating the impact of these
decisions on cultural identity becomes a lens through which to view personal and collective
choices in the Ukrainian context.
On a personal level, the course inspires self-reflection. How do I, as a Ukrainian,
contribute to the preservation and promotion of my own cultural heritage? What role do I play in
shaping the narrative of Ukraine's identity, both within the country and on the global stage?
These questions become essential points of contemplation.
Major concerns arise, particularly regarding the potential impact of globalization on
Ukrainian culture. Witnessing Portugal's evolution amidst global influences prompts
considerations on how Ukraine can navigate similar challenges without compromising the

5
authenticity of its cultural expressions. Striking a balance between openness to the world and the
preservation of unique cultural elements becomes a key consideration.
Cultural diplomacy emerges as an intriguing concept. Portugal's efforts in this regard
prompt thoughts on how Ukraine can leverage its own cultural assets to build bridges, foster
understanding, and contribute to global cultural dialogue.
What will I miss the most?
I reflect on my time spent away from home, the question of what I miss most becomes a
kaleidoscope of memories and experiences, each contributing to a tapestry of longing and
nostalgia. It's a complex emotion, shaped by the unique blend of cultural immersion, personal
connections, and the distinctive aspects of daily life in a foreign land.
First of all is cultural connection. The vivid tapestry of local festivals, customs, and the
ebb and flow of daily life in a different cultural context is something that lingers in my thoughts.
The vibrant energy of markets, the resonance of traditional music, and the unique traditions that
became a part of my routine are all elements I find myself yearning for.
Second one what I miss most, undoubtedly, are the people. The friendships forged, the
camaraderie with classmates, and the connections with locals have left an indelible mark on my
heart. The shared laughter, the collective exploration of the unknown, and the bonds formed
during my time away create a void that resonates deeply.
Third one which comes to my mind is food and culinary experience. The flavors that
danced on my palate, the aromas that filled the air, and the culinary adventures that became a
daily ritual are a source of longing. From street food discoveries to the unique blend of spices
that defined local dishes, the absence of these gastronomic delights is palpable. The landscapes,
the architectural marvels, and the natural beauty that surrounded me are etched in my memory.
Whether it was the sprawling cityscape or the tranquil countryside, the absence of these visually
captivating scenes leaves a yearning for the unique environment that once was my backdrop.
I will never forget about routine and lifestyle which I had in Portugal. The rhythm of
daily life, the unhurried pace of certain activities, and the unique lifestyle of the place I called a
temporary home are aspects I find myself missing. The simplicity or vibrancy of daily routines,
the cultural nuances that shaped my days, and the overall lifestyle have become cherished
memories.
I would like to emphasize about academic and professional experience. The academic or
professional pursuits that defined my time away, the challenges that pushed me beyond my
comfort zone, and the growth opportunities that unfolded are integral parts of what I miss. The
unique academic environment, research projects, or work experiences have become a part of my
academic and professional identity.
I can`t but mention about language and communication. The linguistic diversity, the art
of expressing myself in a foreign language, and the nuances of communication in a different
cultural context are facets I yearn for. The richness of conversations, the beauty of

6
multilingualism, and the unique expressions that defined daily interactions linger in my thoughts.
Choosing to embark on an international program during this period holds personal significance
for me. The decision stems from a multifaceted set of considerations that reflect my aspirations
for personal growth, a desire for global awareness, and a commitment to embracing diversity.
The primary motivation behind this choice lies in recognizing the interconnected nature
of our world. I am driven by a deep-seated belief in the importance of cultivating a global
perspective, and participating in an international program provides a unique opportunity to
understand and engage with different cultures. This firsthand experience is invaluable, offering
insights that go beyond the confines of traditional academic settings.
The decision is also fueled by a genuine thirst for cultural exposure and learning. I am
eager to immerse myself in various ways of life, understanding that such experiences can be
transformative and contribute significantly to my overall education. Beyond academics,
navigating life in a different cultural context challenges me to develop resilience, adaptability,
and a broader worldview.
In addition, I see this international endeavor as a catalyst for personal development. The
exposure to diverse environments not only broadens my horizons but also nurtures qualities of
adaptability and open-mindedness that are crucial in today's dynamic world. I anticipate that
these experiences will shape not only my academic and professional trajectory but also my
character.
As a member of my generation, I believe we bear a collective responsibility to address
global challenges. This international program aligns with my vision of being a global citizen,
equipped with the skills and understanding needed to contribute positively to our interconnected
world. Issues such as climate change, social justice, and global health require a holistic
perspective, and this international experience positions me to navigate and contribute
meaningfully to these complex issues.
Regarding the role of someone fortunate enough to experience different cultures and
ways of life, I view this opportunity as a privilege that comes with responsibilities. I recognize
the obligation to approach cultural differences with empathy, promote understanding, and
contribute to a more harmonious world. Exposure to diverse cultures is not just an opportunity
for personal enrichment but also a means of breaking down stereotypes and fostering tolerance.
In essence, my decision to engage in this international program is a personal journey
toward growth, understanding, and contributing to a more interconnected and harmonious global
community. It reflects a commitment to both personal development and the broader
responsibilities associated with being a global citizen in the 21st century.
To sum up, it was the best 6 months in my life when I got unforgettable experience and
emotions, when I met a lot of nice people and explore myself new world. I will remember
Portugal, people and of course university. I LOVE YOU PORTUGAL 😉)
