temperature recorded is 20∘ C. Find the specific heat capacity of the solid.

Q. 5. 500 g of boiling hot water is poured into a mug of mass 0.15 kg and specific heat
capacity 800 J kg −1 °C −1 . If the temperature of water drops to 70∘ C, calculate the amount of
heat energy lost by water.

Q. 6. What mass of a liquid A of specific heat capacity 0.84 J −1∘ C −1 and at a temperature
40∘ C must be mixed with 100 g of a liquid B of specific heat capacity 2.1 J g −1 ∘ C −1 and at

26 J g −1 )

was added to it. What was the initial temperature of cold water ?

Q. 20. A molten metal weighing 150 g is kept at its melting point, 800∘ C. When it is allowed
to solidify at the same temperature, it gives out 75000 J of heat. What is the specific latent
heat of the metal?
If its specific heat capacity is 200 J kg −1 K −1 , how much additional heat will it give out in
cooling to −50∘ C ?

Q.21. Calculate the current flowing in a nichrome wire immersed in 500 g of turpentine oil
at 20∘ C. Such that the temperature of the oil rises to 70∘ C in 5 minutes when the wire is
connected to a battery of emf 24 V . The specific heat capacity of the oil is 750 J kg −1 ∘ C −1 .

Q. 22. 500 g of molten lead is at melting point is just kept in molten state by a heater of 40
W. If the heater is switched off the temperature of lead starts falling after 7 minutes,

taken by the container, calculate the specific heat capacity of the metal.

Q. 24. 1 kg of ice at 0∘ C is being continuously heated through an electric heater of 1 kW .


Assuming that all the heat is transmitted to ice, calculate the time intervals in seconds for:
(i) ice to completely melt towater at 0∘ C, (ii) water to get heated from 0∘ C to 100∘ C. [Given:
Specific latent heat of ice = 336000 J kg −1 , specific heat capacity of water = 4200 J kg −1 K −1 .

(iii) Assuming that the heat released by water is entirely used to raise the temperature of
calorimeter from 15∘ C to 45∘ C, calculate the specific heat capacity of copper.

Q. 30. In a laboratory experiment for finding the specific latent heat of ice, 100 g of water at
30∘ C was taken in a calorimeter made of copper and mass 10 g , when 10 g of ice at 0∘ C was
added to the mixture and kept within the liquid till the ice melted completely, the final
temperature of the mixture was found to be 20∘ C :
(i) What is the total quantity of water in the calorimeter at 20∘ C ?
(ii) Specific heat capacities of water and copper being 4.2 J g ∘ C−1 and 0.4 J g ∘ C −1
respectively, what quantity of heat would each release in cooling down to 20∘ C from the

(iii) Write an expression for the heat gained by ice on melting.
