IELTS-PRACTICE-TESTS.com
How do you usually greet people when you meet for the first time?
Well, it depends actually who it is ... umm ... sometimes we might shake
hands ... or in less formal situations we might simply say hello ... I don't think
there's any definite social etiquette these days.
IELTS-PRACTICE-TESTS.com
Are there any forms of greetings which you don't like? (Why?)
Actually there are. I have to say that I really don't like half-hearted greetings ...
I mean a handshake which is not firm or lack of eye contact, or something I
really dislike is when ... usually in the case of men they change the standard
handshake to a sort of comrade style ... that really annoys me.
IELTS-PRACTICE-TESTS.com
Are there any forms of greetings that you particularly like?
Well, as a say, I like a respectful greeting and I think that is best shown in a
strong greeting ... a firm handshake, or even a bow can also be very
respectful ... I quite like bowing actually. There's no contact which is
something many people prefer.
PART 2
OK, the unusual social situation I'm going to talk about actually happened
many years ago. I must have been about 9 years old and I'd just changed
schools. And of course on my first day there was a lot of interest from the
other boys ... it was an all-boys school I should say ... about me. Well, one of
the first questions I was asked was which football team I supported. Now
this was unusual for me because where I was brought up football was not a

school sport, in fact there was very little interest in football at all and as such I
knew very little about it. But it seemed I was surrounded by a group of boys
who were 'specialists' in the topic! Anyway, I think, probably out of a fear of
not being accepted I made up the football team I supported! I think I said I
supported Chelsea actually, because it was one of the few teams I knew! Of
course that I was a big mistake because I knew nothing about the team and
that soon became apparent! So of course I felt awful ... very embarrassed and
I think I tried to laugh it off and said I was joking ... something like that. The
lesson of course is very simple, it's always better to be honest!

PART 3
Do you think people face more social problems these days than in the past? (Why?)
Social problems ... umm ... not necessarily ... I mean it probably depends on who
you are and where you live ... I mean some people are better at coping with
social problems than others ... some people have a strong character which helps
them to deal with this kind of problem. Also if you're brought up in a big city for
example perhaps you get more exposure to social problems early on in life and
these experiences help you later on.
IELTS-PRACTICE-TESTS.com
What is your view on social networking online? A good or a bad thing?
Well, personally I welcome it. There are of course pitfalls ... things to be
careful of ... as with anything ... but on the whole I think it's a great way to
keep in touch with your friends and family, and a great way to meet new
people ... which can be good in both social and work situations. Things to be
cautious about I suppose would be security ... not giving away to much
IELTS-PRACTICE-TESTS.com
information to people you don't know, and maybe overuse ... you could become a
bit addicted to it if you're not careful.
Do you think this kind of networking will ultimately replace other forms of social networking?
I don't think it will replace other forms. We all enjoy meeting people face to face
and you simply can't replicate that on any computer. But I think the balance will
change and is probably changing already ... so people will use online as one source
of contacts more and more but it's just another tool and I think people will
continue to use more traditional ways and enjoy using those ways.
