Mathematics 253 — Test 1 — 30 minutes

October 7th, 2020

• The test consists of 4 pages and 2 questions worth a total of 18 marks.

• This is a closed-book examination. None of the following are allowed:

documents, cheat sheets or electronic devices of any kind (including calcu-
lators, cell phones, etc.)

• No work on this page will be marked.

• Fill in the information below before turning to the questions.

1. 6 marks Consider the plane x = 4 − 3z − 2y.
(a) For what value(s) of γ is the point (0, γ, 0) on the plane?

Solution: Substituting (x, y, z) = (0, γ, 0) we get the equation

0 = 4 − 0 − 2γ

The only solution is γ = 2.

(b) Find the minimum distance from the point (1, 0, 0) to the plane.

Solution: Use the previous answer to get a vector

u = h1, 0, 0i − h0, γ, 0i = h1, −γ, 0i = h1, −2, 0i

The normal vector to the plane is n = h1, 2, 3i.

Now
u·n 1−4 −3
scalar projnu = =√ =√
knk 1+4+9 14
So the distance is √3 .

2. 12 marks This question has 4 parts, labelled (a)–(d).
Consider the parametric curve defined by

r(t) = het sin(t), et cos(t)i

for 0 ≤ t ≤ π2 .
(a) Compute r(0) and r( π2 )

et sin(t) t sin(t)
Solution: Since r(t) = t =e , we compute
e cos(t) cos(t)

0 sin(0) 0
r(0) = e =
cos(0) 1

and
sin( π2 )

π π 1
r( π2 ) =e 2 = e2
cos( π2 ) 0

(b) Find a parametric equation for the tangent line to the curve at t = π4 .

Solution: First, compute that

 t
0 e sin (t) + et cos (t) t sin (t) + cos (t)
r (t) = =e
−et sin (t) + et cos (t) − sin (t) + cos (t)
  "√ π

Let v = r0 ( π4 ) =e4 = where α = 2
. Or just
−α + α 0 2

v= (because any parallel vector will do).

π 2 4 1
Also let r0 = r( 4 ) = 2 e

Then the tangent line to the curve has equation
√

R(s) = e4 +s
2 1 0

Recall that our curve is defined parametrically by
r(t) = het sin(t), et cos(t)i
(c) Sketch this curve for t ∈ [− π2 , π2 ].

Solution:

(d) Setup a calculus expression for the arclength of this curve between t =
0.1 and t = 1. You do not need to evaluate your expression.

Solution: Compute
q
kr (t)k = (et sin (t) + et cos (t))2 + (et sin (t) − et cos (t))2

q
= e (sin t + cos t)2 + (sin t − cos t)2

= e sin2 t + cos2 t + 2 sin t cos t + sin2 t + cos2 t − 2 sin t cos t

= et 1 + 1

= 2et
The arc length of the curve is therefore given by the integral
√ Z 1 τ
A= 2 e dτ
