Plan Of Investigation
My theme for this English SBA is crime and violence. The subtopic is Causes of Crime and
Violence the reason for choosing this topic is because after observing the high amount of crime
and violence I wanted to know more and find out about what is causing the crime and violence to
be happening. As an English student, I find that the benefits of this SBA are vocabulary
expansion, research skills, and comprehension. The 3 artifacts that I intend to use are Magazine
Articles, Blogs, and Poems. The sources I will use are Documentaries, articles, and websites. You
will see my comprehension being used in the written report, My research skills being used in
references and my vocabulary expansion skills being used in the written report

https://blog.ipleaders.in/causes-of-crime/ Athira R Nair, a student of the School of Law, Christ
University, Bangalore, writes this article. This article aims to shed light on the various types of
crime, their causes, and measures to curb them.

This article has been published by Sneha Mahawar.

Poverty is one of the main reasons for crime. Countries with high rates of economic deprivation
tend to witness higher crime rates than other countries. Since people do not have the means to
secure a living in the right ways, they invest their time in criminal activities since they are not
only an easy means to get what they want but also do not require any other prerequisite talents.
The ever-increasing divide we are witnessing between the rich and the poor can also be
attributed to more and more of the poor looking to crime as a means for living. Not being able to
earn and sustain themselves leaves people so frustrated that they resort to illegal means to sustain
themselves and their families. According to the data collected by National Crime Records
Bureau, theft is one of the most common crimes in India. All in all, the wealth inequality and
insufficient means to acquire a living lawfully is driving the poor in India towards a life of crime.

Poem: Time to Stand Against Crime and Violence by Dillon Ollivierre

Time to stand!
Time to counteract the crime and violence which seems to hold our country at ransom
Time to unite in numbers, time to replace the negativity with positivity
Time to join forces with visionaries like Nailah John and Shari Osborne, Time to save our
country
Time to stand together against crime and violence
Time to end the silence!

Another one gone this morning

A brother brutalized this evening
My sister has gone missing
Mother’s and father’s are stressing
Crime and violence continues to escalate
The image of a beautiful Dominica these perpetrators penetrate

Stop! Before you decide to stand or not walk in the shoes of those who suffer
How would you feel if you lost your daughter?
How would you feel if someone endangered the life of your sister?
How would you feel if someone brutalize your brother or father?
How would you feel if it all happened before your eyes?
I ask again how would you feel if it all happened before your eyes?

Dominicans let us stand united as one

With the theme “together as one we can”
Let us stand regardless of political affiliation
Let us stand as we exceed our very own limitations
Let us combat the negativity that flows like a river within our country
Let us replace the hate with love, let us rebuild our country

I Dillon Ollivierre is taking a stand

Extending my hand
Friends and family we must stand together as one
Supporters of my poetry, supporters of a better Dominica we must stand together as one Mr.
Prime Minister, Mr. Opposition the time is now for a joint effort, please I beg

prosperity-chang

WESTERN BUREAU:

National Security Minister Dr Horace Chang said prosperity and economic growth are under
threat and could derail the ability of the Government in meeting its obligations to pay suitable
wages or carry out infrastructure developments if crime and violence are not brought under
control.

Chang was delivering the keynote address at Saturday’s launch of a national social services fair,
aimed at rescuing at-risk youth, who are figured among gang-related activities that are
responsible for the country’s high homicide figures.

“Unless we have a manageable level of criminal violence, unless there is good order and public
safety, we will never have the level of growth that we wish to have as a country and provide our
people with the kind of life that is required,” he said.
Reflection 1
When I began this SBA, I was struck by how prevalent crime and violence have become, with
many individuals seemingly choosing that path. However, as I gathered more data, my
understanding deepened. The article "Causes of Crime" illuminates the factors that lead people to
commit crimes instead of seeking employment or living a typical life like everyone else I learned
that there are multiple reasons why people live a life of crime.

The poem "Time to Stand Against Crime and Violence" powerfully captures the escalating crime
and violence in Dominica. It particularly resonates with those affected, especially a mother who
lost her daughter to such senseless acts. Frustrated by the inaction around her, she took a brave
stand to protest and demand change, urging others to join the fight against this urgent issue. In
this poem, I learned lessons about the impact of crime and the collective response needed to
address it. address it.

The news article "Crime and Violence Threatening Growth and Prosperity" discusses the high
levels of homicide and gang activity in the country. It highlights efforts to rescue young people
involved in gangs, as this violence is resulting in a significant number of killings. The article
emphasizes the need to achieve a more manageable level of crime and violence to foster a
peaceful environment. Additionally, it addresses concerns regarding the current state of growth
in the country and the desire to make it more manageable, as the situation is currently
unmanageable. From the article, I learned crucial lessons about the relationship between crime
and social development.
Reflection 2
"Causes of Crime" is a blog presented in an argumentative tone, particularly evident in the
opening paragraph, which discusses poverty. The first line states, "Poverty is one of the primary
reasons for crime." This assertion establishes that poverty significantly influences crime rates,
setting the foundation for the following discussion.

"Time to Stand Against Crime and Violence" is a poem that employs rhetorical questions, such
as, "How would you feel if you lost your daughter?" This question invites the audience to
connect on a personal level. It challenges readers to empathize with crime victims, making the
issue feel more immediate and relatable. By encouraging them to reflect on their emotions, the
question fosters a deeper connection to the message. This strategy effectively stirs emotional
responses and motivates the audience to consider the urgency of the situation, ultimately
promoting a sense of community and collective responsibility.

The article "Crime and Violence Threatening Growth and Prosperity" utilizes expert appeal to convey its
message. As the National Security Minister, Dr. Horace Chang shares his firsthand experiences regarding the
impact of crime on our economy. This expert appeal is effective because it establishes his credibility,
reassuring readers of his understanding of the issues at hand. By illustrating the negative effects of crime on the
economy, Dr. Chang encourages audiences to take his warnings seriously and consider the government's
proposed measures as essential. This approach underscores the urgency of addressing crime to safeguard
national prosperity, making the message more persuasive and impactful.
Reflection 3
This SBA helped me understand why some people turn to a life of crime and highlighted the
importance of raising awareness about this issue. Initially, when my group started, we struggled
to choose a topic, and many of us didn’t begin the SBA early because we didn’t know what to do
for the most part. However, we worked through these challenges together. This experience taught
me how to be a better team player and to communicate better because I express my ideas clearly
and listen actively to my teammates.

Researching crime and violence was both informative and eye-opening, allowing me to enhance
my research and comprehension skills. As I explored various aspects of the topic, from the root
causes of crime to its societal impact, I expanded my vocabulary. I gained a deeper
understanding of how these issues affect individuals and communities. Listening to my
teammates present on their subtopics such as how crime and violence affect the country further
broadened my knowledge. This project made me realize the significance of these issues and their
interconnections, deepening my awareness of the importance of addressing crime and violence in
society. Overall, it was a rewarding experience emphasizing the need to be more informed about
the world's challenges today.
