CAPSTONE PROJECT

Advanced Building Information Modelling (BIM)

STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE (SOP)

Capstone Project Objectives:

The primary objectives of the Capstone Project are as follows:
1. Integrated Learning Experience: The Capstone Project aims to provide students with
a comprehensive and integrated learning experience that synthesizes the modules
studied throughout the program. It culminates in the completion of a final project that
showcases the students' research and application skills.
2. BIM-Related Issue and Solution Demonstration: Through the project, students are
expected to identify a BIM-related issue and propose a solution that enhances project
objectives. They will showcase their proficiency in using an appropriate BIM model
and technology to implement their proposed solution.
3. Demonstration of Professionalism: The Capstone Project offers an opportunity for
students to demonstrate professionalism by effectively applying technology in their
research and project presentation. Collaborative work with peers is encouraged,
fostering teamwork and cooperation.
4. Report and Evaluation of Applied Research Outcomes: Students will report and
evaluate the outcomes of their applied research, including the potential benefits to
professional practice. The project's findings will contribute to the advancement of BIM
practices in the construction industry.

Types of Capstone Projects:

The Capstone Project can take various forms:
Applied Project:

• Participants may select real-world scenarios and propose viable solutions

using the skills acquired during the course.

Externally Oriented Project:

• Professional projects aimed at providing solutions for specific clients.

Groups will analyze problems and offer step-by-step solutions in a defined
context.

Case Study:

• Students may analyze and present a detailed examination of a specific case

related to BIM.

Project Guidelines:
Before commencing the project, each group must finalize the topic, problem definition, and
applied research plan in consultation with the instructor. Critical analysis of academic and
professional resources is necessary to design, develop, analyze, and evaluate a reliable BIM-
based solution.
Duration:
The exercise will span for entire semester (Contact hours: approximately 2-3 hours of contact
hours, including discussions, report submission, and presentations).
Group Responsibilities:
Each group is required to identify a problem and develop a BIM-based solution. The instructor
will assist learners by providing feedback and guidance throughout the project's duration.
Report and Presentation:
Each group must present a comprehensive report, including sections such as
introduction/background, problem statement, scope and objectives of the study, methodology,
project description, results and recommendations, conclusion and lessons learned, and
references (Refer report format). The findings will also be presented through a PowerPoint
presentation.
Evaluation:
The project will be evaluated based on a total of 20 marks, with 15 marks allocated for the
actual work and report writing and 5 marks for presentation.
