Dyeing Chemicals

Dispersing and leveling agent for PES fibers

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NEOGEN DFTC

About PES fibers

Polyester fibers are made of linear macromolecules containing at least 85 % of an ester in the chain.
This ester is made through the reaction between ethylene glycol and phathalic acid derivatives (e.g.
terephthalic acid or dimethyl terephthalate). During the polycondensationreaction, cyclic oligomers
with very low water-solubility can be formed (1 - 3 % on the weight of the fibre). These oligomers
tend to migrate to the surface of the fibre during dyeing, thus affecting negatively level dyeing and
rub-fastness properties.

PES fibers have a very high degree of cristallinity, which allows for excellent resistance to heat
and other mechanical properties. On the other hand, this compact structure inhibits the diffusion
of the colorants into the fibers during dyeing. To counteract this effect the use of dyeing accelerants
(so-called carriers), which are harmful for the environment and in many cases are toxic for humans,
has been common practice for many years. Modified PES fibers are now gaining importance in the
market. Physical and chemical alterations made to the structure of the fibre during the manufacturing
process, these fibers show a lower cristallinity and as a result they are easier to dye without the need
for carriers.

Dyeing of Polyester fibers

Articles made of pure PES are dyed almost exclusively using batch dyeing techniques and among
these, dyeing under high-temperature conditions is the most commonly applied. Dyeing polyester
fibers under atmospheric conditions (below 100 ºC) was also frequently used in the past with the aid
of carriers. Since these substances are ecologically harmful, dyeing below 100 ºC is no longer in use
today for pure PES fibers, unless the modified polyester fibers known as NCD (Non-Carrier Dyeable)
fibers are employed.

These new fibers show a lower crystallinity and as a result are easier to dye without need for carriers.
Moreover, the use of sulphated aromatic polycarboxilic acid as co-monomers leads to an increase in
the number of anionic sites, granting a better exhaustion of cationic dyestuffs.

NEOGEN DFTC

NEOGEN DFTC functions as both dispersing auxiliary and leveling agent in polyester dyeing.
Concerning high-temperature dyeing, the process is usually carried out in acidic conditions (pH 4 - 5)
with addition of acetic acid under pressure at 125 – 135 ºC. In these conditions NEOGEN DFTC, is
helpful in the prevention of excessively rapid absorption. This product has very right molecules of
ethylene oxide units and is developed in order to counteract the migration of oligomers typical of PES
fibers. In fact, oligomeric components (cyclic trimers of ethylene terephthalate are especially harmful)
tend to migrate out of the fiber during dyeing, thus forming with the dye agglomerates that can
deposit on the textile or on the dyeing equipment.

In case polyester fiber in use in not a NCD type, use of carriers is mandatory for trouble free dyeing.
Incorporation of carriers in the NEOGEN formulation can be done. Or carrier formulation can be used
as separate product. But this will introduces harmful substances like chlorinated products, benzene
and formaldehyde substances. Therefore it is advisable to discuss and take permission from the buyer
or deciding authority.

Dosing: Refer to Product Data Sheet below

Neogen DFTC is a concentrated leveling and dispersing agent for all types of disperse dyes during
dyeing of polyester fibre, yarn and fabrics. It gives excellent level dyeing even in dyeing of sensitive
disperse dyes, as compared to the conventional DFT leveling agents.
