Precisely!

Folk poetry is a type of poetry that comes

from the traditions of a particular culture or
community. It is often created and shared
orally, meaning people tell or sing the poems
rather than write them down.

Folk poetry usually reflects everyday life,

beliefs, and values of the people, often telling
stories about heroes, nature, or moral lessons.
It's simple, rhythmic, and often easy to
remember, making it accessible to everyone in
the community.

It comes in various forms, such as

Folk stories often contain several key elements

that help define their structure and purpose.
Here are some of the common elements:

1. Cultural Context: They often

incorporate the beliefs, customs, and
values of the culture from which they
originate, providing insight into that
society.
2. Universal Themes: Common themes
include good vs. evil, heroism, morality,
and the importance of community.
These themes resonate across
cultures.
3. Simple Plot Structure: The plots are
usually straightforward, often following
a clear beginning, middle, and end.
They often include a conflict and a
resolution.
4. Moral or Lesson: Many folk stories
conclude with a moral lesson or a
cautionary message, teaching values or
life lessons to the audience.
5. Symbolism and Imagery: Folk stories
frequently use symbols and vivid
imagery to convey deeper meanings
and enhance the storytelling
experience.
6. Magical Elements: Many folk stories
include magical or supernatural
elements that defy the laws of nature,
adding to the intrigue and moral
implications.

Some known folk poetry:

1. Judith
2. The Wanderer
3. The Seafarer
4. The Battle of Maldon
5. The Dream of the Rood
6. The Husband’s Message
7. Beowulf

These works exemplify the oral tradition and

cultural values of the Anglo-Saxon period,
showcasing themes of heroism, loss, and the
human experience. However, authorship is
difficult to determine, thus authors remain
anonymous.

Anyway, are you familiar with these works?

E. DISCUSSING (The teacher will continue the discussion.)

NEW CONCEPTS
AND Since Beowulf is a long epic poem, for you to
PRACTICING understand it effectively, I have prepared a
NEW SKILLS #2 summary of the story.

Kindly get one and pass. You only have 3

minutes to read and analyze the story.

Summary of Beowulf

Beowulf is an epic poem set in Scandinavia,

following the story of a young warrior named
Beowulf.

He hears of the troubles faced by King

Hrothgar of the Danes, whose great hall,
Heorot, is under attack by the monstrous
creature Grendel. Seeking glory and to help
the Danes, Beowulf sails to their land with a
group of warriors.

Upon arrival, Beowulf confronts Grendel and

fights him barehanded, ultimately defeating the
monster and tearing off his arm. Grendel flees
to his lair, mortally wounded, and dies. The
Danes celebrate Beowulf's victory, and he is
honored with gifts.

However, Grendel’s mother seeks revenge,

attacking Heorot. Beowulf tracks her to her
underwater lair, where he fights her with a
magical sword he finds. After defeating her, he
returns to Geatland, where he eventually
becomes king.

Years later, as an aging king, Beowulf faces a

new threat: a dragon that terrorizes his
kingdom. Despite his age, he courageously
decides to confront the dragon. In the battle,
Beowulf defeats the dragon but is mortally
wounded. He dies, leaving a legacy of bravery
and heroism, and is mourned by his people.
