CA TEST – IV

SUBJECT: STRENGTH OF MATERIALS DATE:

YEAR/SEM: II / III DEPT: MECHANICAL
DURATION: 3 Hrs. MAX. MARKS: 100

Note: Answer ten questions by selecting two questions from each unit.
Each question carries 10 marks each.

1) a). Explain various types of ferrous metals.

b). Explain various types of non-ferrous metals.
c). Explain Applications of Nano materials.
d). Explain with neat sketch working of Rockwell hardness testing machine.
2) a). Sketch and explain the stress–strain diagram for mild steel specimen with its
salient points.
b). A circular bar of 20mm diameter and 300mm long carries a tensile load of
30KN. Determine the stress, strain, and elongation of the bar. Assume young’s
modulus E = 2 x 105 N/mm2
c). (i) A concrete cube of 150mm size crushes at a load of 337.5KN. Determine
the working stress, if the factor of safety is 3.
(ii) A wooden specimen of cross sectional dimensions 100mm x 100mm
fails under an axial compression of 160KN. Determine the safe working stress
in the wood in compression assuming factor of safety 4.
d). Write short notes on fatigue test and creep test.

3) a). Define the following. (i) Lateral strain, (ii) Poisson’s ratio, (iii) Volumetric
strain, (iv) Bulk modulus.
b). A steel bar of 50mm wide, 12mm thickness and length of 500m is subjected
to a pull of 100KN. If E = 2 x 10 5 N/mm2, find the elongation, changes in
thickness, width and volume of the bar. Take 1/m = 0.25.
c). A circular bar of length 150mm and diameter of 50mm is subjected to an
axial pull of 400KN. The extension in length and contraction in diameter were
found to be 0.25mm and 0.02mm respectively after loading. Calculate the
following (i) Poisson’s ratio (ii) Young’s Modulus (iii) Modulus of rigidity and
(iv) Bulk Modulus.
d). An axial pull of 50KN is suddenly applied to a steel rod of 2m long and
1000 mm2 in cross section. Calculate the following (i) instantaneous stress, (ii)
instantaneous elongation, (iii) strain energy stored. Assume E = 2 x 105 N/mm2

4) a). (i) Write the assumptions made in theory of pure torsion.

(ii) State the advantages of hollow shaft over solid shaft.
b). A solid shaft is to transmit 100KW at 180 rpm. Calculate the suitable
diameter of the shaft, if maximum intensity of shear stress should not exceed
60N/mm2, and the angle of twist in a length of 3.5m should not exceed one
degree. Take rigidity modulus for the material of the shaft is 0.8 x 105 N/mm2.
c). A hollow shaft having inner diameter 0.6 times of outer diameter is replace a
solid shaft of a same material to transmit 550KW at 220rpm. The permissible
shear stress is 80N/mm2, if the maximum torque exceeds the mean torque by
25%. Calculate diameters of solid shaft and solid shaft. Also calculate the
percentage saving in materials.
d). A solid shaft is to transmit 40KW at 120 rpm. Calculate the suitable
diameter of the shaft, if maximum intensity of shear stress should not exceed
100N/mm2. The angle of twist in a length of 3.5m should not exceed one
degree, if the maximum torque exceeds the mean torque by 25%.
Assume modulus of rigidity for the material of the shaft is 0.8 x 105 N/mm2.

5) a). (i) Difference between closely coiled helical spring and open coiled helical
spring.
(ii) State the applications of coiled springs.
b). A truck weighing 30KN and moving at 5kmph, has to be brought to rest by a
buffer. Find how many springs each of 18 coils, will be required to store the
energy of motion during a compression of 200mm. the spring is made out of
25mm diameter steel rod coiled to a mean diameter of 240mm. Assume
modulus of rigidity for the material is 0.84 x 105 N/mm2.
c). Calculate the increase in volume of the boiler shell and 1.5m diameter, when
subjected to an internal pressure of 2N/mm2. The thickness is such that the
maximum tensile stress is not to exceed 30N/mm2. Also calculate the change in
length and diameter. Take E=2.1 x 105 N/mm2 & poison’s ratio is 1/m = 0.25.
d). A cylindrical shell 3m long, 500mm in diameter is made up of 20mm thick
plate, if cylinder is subjected to an internal pressure of 5 N/mm 2, find the value
of resulting hoop stress, longitudinal stress, change in diameter, change in
length and change in volume. Take E=2 x 10 5 N/mm2 and poison’s ratio is 1/m
= 0.3.
