Assignment on the course: History of Ethiopia and the Horn
(Hist.1012)
 This assignment is performed in group; hence each member of the group
should take part boldly.
 Before you are dealing with the questions please read carefully and act
accordingly.
 Give brief and precise answer.
 Your hand writing should be clear, legible and coherent.
 Copy from other group cost you with no mark.
 Internet sources are not advisable. Use only the History Module.
 There will be presentation session depend on convenience of time.
 It covers 20 % of the total assessment.

Group One

1. Discuss briefly the autonomous and semi-autonomous peoples and states


existed in Ethiopia and the Horn at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
2. Explicate well the legacy of Italian rule(1936-41) in Ethiopia, its major
consequences and the role of patriotic resistance within the time scope.
3. Explain well the diplomatic relations and their confrontations against external
challenges during the reign of Emperor Yohannis IV and Menilik II.
4. Explain the causes, course and consequences of the 1960 coup attempt.
5. What administrative and economic measures did Emperor Haile-Selassie
took immediately after his reinstatement to the throne and how did
those measures help to consolidate his power?
Group Two
1. Discuss the socio-economic and political circumstances that led to the rise of
Gibe Monarchical states in Ethiopia.
2. Explain why Italians invade Ethiopia in 1935 and discuss the deeds of
Ethiopian Patriots focusing on their achievements and weakness.
3. Mention the major work done (measures taken) by Emperor Haile-Selassie in
consolidating Autocracy in detail.
4. Identity the main reforms of Provisional Military Administrative Council
(PMAC) or Derg, Why opposition widely mounted against PMAC /Derg/ and
what factors responsible for the downfall of Derg regime?
5. Elaborate the role of local and long-distance trade in the interactions
between peoples and states of Ethiopia and the Horn.

Group Three
1. Expound the origin, trade routes, market places, trade commodities, medium
of transaction, merchants and the impacts of the long distance trade of
Ethiopia during the 19th century A.D.
2. Briefly explain how slaves were acquired in Ethiopia, their purpose and
where they sold.
3. Explain the domestic challenges Emperor Haile Selassie I faced immediately
after the expulsion of the Italians.
4. Discuss the origin and the development of the Ethiopian Student Movement.
5. Explicate the internal and external circumstances that led Menilek II’s
territorial expansion to south.
Group Four
1. Discuss about the socio-economic developments of Ethiopia from 1800 to
1941 in relation with Agricultural & land tenure condition, slavery and slave
trade, manufacturing and urbanization.
2. Explain well the diplomatic relations and their confrontations against external
challenges during the reign of Emperor Yohannis IV and Menilik II.
3. Briefly explain about the major battles that Ethiopia fought from 1848 to
1941, and outline the implication of these battles on the sovereignty and
independence of Ethiopia.
4. Describe about the battle of Adwa and its consequences. What lessons learnt
from this battle for the current situations of Ethiopia.
5. What was the immediate context that led to the promulgation of the
Revised 1955 Constitution of Ethiopia? Discuss the major provisions
of the Constitution.

Group Five
1. Mention the post Adwa period development in Ethiopia and factors that led
to the foundation of Addis Ababa as the country’s capital.
2. Compare and contrast the Modernization attempts and the downfall of
Emperor Tewodros II and Emperor Yohannis IV.
3. Discuss important manifestations of British and Americans’ dominance in
Ethiopian’s domestic and foreign affairs in the 1940’s and 1950’s.
4. Debate about the major oppositions broke out against Emperor Haile
Selassie I and describes the causes of these oppositions? Mentionthe long
standing reasons for the out broke of 1974 Ethiopia Revolution and the
major gains of this revolution for the people of Ethiopia.
5. Discuss the causes, course and the consequences of, the Gojjam peasant
uprising.
