COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course provides a wide range of environmental engineering related knowledge.


It deals with the overall perspective of various environmental engineering issues
both at the domestic as well as at the community level, and the skills required to
evaluate, analyze and solve the environmental engineering related problems, by
learning the design skills of wastewater treatment units.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Students will understand, analyze and give solutions to various the environmental
issues, especially related to sanitary engineering

1) Estimation of sewage quantities

Population characteristics, population forecasting, waste water generation,


Rainfall intensity formulas, hydrograph and weather flow, sewage quantities;
Variations and rates of flows; Velocity gradient and limiting velocities.
2) Characteristics of sewage
Sampling and testing techniques, sampling techniques and examination of
waste water (Physical, chemical and microbiological parameters). Design,
construction and maintenance of sewage system Separate and combined
systems; Types, shapes, size and materials of sewers; Sewer appurtenances,
pipe strengths and tests.
3) Construction and maintenance of sewer system and analysis
Diameter and gradient, sewer joints, grading, laying, jointing and testing of
sewers. Municipal and industrial wastes; Water pollution, causes and control
parameter; Effluent disposal guideline and standards- Pakistan National
Environmental Quality Standards (NEQS)
4) Sewage treatment and disposal
Primary, secondary and tertiary treatment; Screening grit chamber, skimming
tanks and sedimentation tanks; Activated sludge treatment, tricking filters,
oxidation ponds, etc. Receiving body, assimilation capacity; Stream pollution
and self-recovery, sludge handling and disposal; Effluent reuses, Control and
management of industrial waste waters.
5) Requirements and arrangement of building drainage
Soil pipes, anti-syphon pipes and waste water pipes; sanitary fixtures and
traps; House connection and testing of house drainage; Cross connection and
back syphonage control.
6) Solid waste management
Types, characteristics, sources and quantities of solid waste; collection
disposal and recycling
