HCI - it design and use of computer

as a field:
it's suited at the interaction of
computer science
behavioral
design
media studies, and several fields of science.

first popularized by
Stuart k.Card
Allen Newel
Thomas p. Morgan

til late 1970, only information technology professionals and dedicated hobbyies
only interacts with computer

afterwards, personal computers and personal computersarrived and changed the

history for the last time.

personal softwares includes:

text editors like notepad ++
spreadsheets
interactive games

personal computers such as

operating systems - Linux the great and Windows bullshit
hardware - rasperypi
programming languages like C, C++ and the like started with low level languages

Introduction to Interface

what's an interface?
Interface is shared boundary between two separate components of computer systems
to exchange information

Hardware Interface
they exist in many parts of components:
buses
storage
devices
I/O devices

Software Interface:
operating systems interacts with hardware
Application programms running on OS interacts via Streams
OOP interacts via its Methods

User Interface
it's a components of the computer that can be visualized, heard, touched,
interacted and understood by the common people

The two main elements of User Unterface is:

Input
Output
Input
interaction with a computer where the user provides information for a computers
they could be one of the following.
keyboard
mouse
trackball
persons finger for touch-screens
voice
these informations is all about what the user wants from the computer.

Output
This is the processed information sent to the users as a result of the input
information user provided.
the Output can be in the form of
sounds (voice)
visual (image)
vibration
copying the other components like

The goal with user interface is to make it simple and to work.

easy
productive
enjoyable

So, User Interface Design belongs to a field called HCI which deal with
learning
thinking and desiging of how user and computer communicated with each other

GUI
Development of many new communication and display techiniques to a package known
as GUI

it has the following features

helping in product design through style guides
giving instruction how to update the design softwares

WWW
The World Wide Web (WWW) is a system of interlinked hypertext documents and
multimedia content that is accessed via the Internet.

Internet is the interconnected computer and servers across the World

Good User Interface

easy and efficient to use
allows users whay thier wanted to do.
less internal working details.
abstraction
real benefits interms of money

For businesses, Good Interfaces posses the following.

Higher Staff productivity
Lower Staff turn-over
Higher staff team sprit
Higher job satisfaction
Lower operating systems costs

Effective User Interface

easier and simple interaction
posses the following
1. clear interface
2. consistent interface
3. simple interface
4. user controlled
5. direct interface
6. forgiving
7. provide feedback
8. aestetic

IMPORTANT OF DESIGN
called good if it's produces Output of user's requirement

it has the following features

allows users on the data and activity
provides data to its users

UNIT TWO.

Graphical user interface

command line interface.
- this where the user responds to the visiual prompt by typing in on a
specified line of code. ex: UNIX, LINUX, DOS.

ADVANTAGES:
FEWER RESOURCES
CONCISE AND POWERFUL
EXPERT-FRENDLY
EASIER TO AUTOMATE VIA SCRIPTING

DISADVANTAGES;
COMMANDS NOT OBVIUOS
NOT VISUALLY RICH
BEGINNER UNFREINDLY

THE FIRST GUI:

designed by xerox corporation palo alto research- 1970
then, apple macintosh emerged.
one of their slow acceptance was a considerable GPU power and high quality
monitor
the gui was first developed by xerox parc by alan kay, douglas engelbart...

then apple introduced a lisa computer.

The xerox team also building an increadable researchs till today such as :
GUI
Ethernet
laser printer

GUI use windows, icons, menus to carry commands such as opening, deleting, and
moving files

GUI OS :
MS windows
Apple 7 and Mac OS
Chrome OS
GUI Interfaces
Microsoft programms
Internet

components of GUI.
Pointers
pointing devices
icons
DeskTop
windows
menus

ACTIONS FOR GUI

properties of Object:
can be visualized, heard, felt, and understandable
can interacts with other objects independently
actions can be accessing and altering objects
have standardize and distinguishable behavior.

popularity of graphics.
FEATURES IN GRAPHICAL SYSTEM.
controls move when activated and seemed to rise above the screen.
lines are engraved on the screen.
ICONS which are graphical representation of the object is used in place of
text.
menu bars and pull downs helped naviagation so easily
menu pop-up on screen
it uses, radio buttons, check boxesm list boxes, and palettes for selection
purpose.
THE GRAPHICAL INTERFACE IS ALSO KNOWN AS WIMP:
WINDOWS
ICONS
MENUS
POINTER

THE CONCEPT OF THE DIRECT MANIPULATION

it refers the style of communicatoin for graphical systems where users interact
with the direct objects rather going in abstract commands
it has the following:
- the system is an extension of the real World
- apps and tools are not important.
- rather known environment and known way to use data.

CONTINUOUS VIEW OF OBJECTS AND ACTIONS

- objects are always visible on screen.
- move of action are clear
- complex commands are replaced
- the system is transparent to the user.
FAST INCREASING ACTIONS PRODUCING BISUAL RESULTS
- the results of actions are not planned.
REVERSE OF INCREAMENTAL ACTIONS.
- errors can undone easily.

BEST EXAMPLE TO THE DIRECT MANIPULATION IS VIDEO GAMES.

THE CONCEPT OF INDIRECT MANIPULATOIN

- it places words and text instead of icons
- pointing is replaced by typing.
in windows both exists together.
pointing to gui is DIRECT
selecting it with to get menu is inderect
GRAPHICAL SYSTEMS PROS AND CONS.
PROS.
quick identification of sysmbols.
rapid learning
quick usage
simple to remember
more natural
utilize visual
less error.
feedback from actions
greater control
predictable reply
reversable actions.
reduces anxiety
more appealing
less space
simple augmenting
minimization of typing
simplicity of transition

CONS
need for learning
lack of desiging rules
variation in techiniques
infamiliar context
restriction in human
requirements for OS like windows
CHARACTERISTICS OF GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE.
- ADVANCED VISUAL PRESENTATION
- INTERACTOIN USING PICK AND CLICK
- LIMITED INTERFACE OPTIONS
- VISUALIZATION
- BEHAVIOR OF OBJECTS- CONTAINER OBJECT, DATA OBJECT, DEVICES OBJECT.
- PERSONS RECOGNITION MEMORY
- MULTIPLE TASKING
