Reflective Learning Journal Task 11.1
Consider the following questions about course books:
1. Have you ever used a course book, either as a language teacher or
as a student studying a foreign language?
In no less than 250 words discuss your experience of learning or teaching
using a course book.
Take into account the following points:
- If a course book was used, was it followed unit by unit rigidly or were
certain units selected and in a different order?
- Do you think the course book helped or hindered the teacher?
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of using a course
book?
Not so long ago, I read a course book about grammar "English grammar" I
have been recommended this book for a long time, but I have never been
particularly fond of reading. But , this book made me reconsider my
knowledge of grammar. This is really great grammar book. It gives you
plenty of exercises to practice on what you have learnt. Lessons are brief
and comprehensive. They are so well presented that readers are not left
with any doubt. As an English language teacher I recommend this book to
all the students who wish to be excellent user of English language. This is
must to read book.
There are some advantages of course books. They provide readily available
material for the teacher
They normally follow a logical progression - students and teacher can see
what material has been covered and what material is going to be covered.
This gives a sense of direction.
Frankly speaking, there are disadvantages of using course books
- Students may preview something you don't want them to see just yet,
thus
taking away the element of surprise.
They usually follow a format from unit to unit which can be tedious.
• They often contain a lot of controlled language practice but not
enough
freer practice activities.
They can often contain a lot of contrived reading and listening material
to suit the language aim of a particular unit and not enough authentic
material
They are usually written for a general audience and not your class.
I have a lot of different hobbies. I like to dance, sing. I really like to read
books in my free time. Moreover, I work at school and I will always have to
read books and repeat grammar. I like to read everything, both scientific and
adventure. My favourite book is Grammar Way. When I have a free minute,
I sit down on the couch and read and do exercises. If anyone wants to
improve English and basic grammar then this book is definitely perfect.
This book covers thoroughly grammar topics and lots of practice exercises,
one ultimate solution for complete English, writing or reading and speaking.
Detailed correct information of all topics of English Grammar. Highly
recommended to all.
Actually, the grammar rules are well explained. The examples given are
easy to understand. But students who read English as a second language
may need more exercises. This gives a sense of direction.
They allow the student to study alone.
They can review past lessons and preview future lessons.
They provide an automatic 'control of how much language is
introduced at a time.
They can provide a window to the world' from inside the classroom.
There are some disadvantages of using course books . That means the
course book can only meet the needs of certain
students.
The material can sometimes be seen as a little bland in order to avoid
offending certain types of students. This may mean that controversial
subjects, which may apply to the “real world” are ignored.
Portfolio Task 11.2
Visit any ELT publishers’ website, choose a sample of a course book from
the site, then state in no less than 250 words whether you would like to work
with this material or not and the reasons why
I am going to tell about English for beginners is a book from the famous
New Headway Beginner - English Course student's book for beginners
series. The authors are Liz and John Soars: Oxford University Press - only
this, already speaks about the quality of the book. I would like to emphasize
that the proposed books "New Headway beginner" are for students studying
in a class under the guidance of a teacher.
Actually, books in this series are very popular around the world because of
their accessibility, manner of presentation of material, clarity through
pictures. I strongly advise students and schoolchildren who are beginning to
learn English. If you have already finished studying books from the "New
Headway elementary" initial course, this will be your second initial step to
learning English, after which your knowledge of English will be at the
"beginner" level!
Headway and its award-winning authors, Liz and John Soars, are names
that have become synonymous with teaching English. Teach on a perfectly
balanced headway grammar and skills curriculum based on the world-
famous course methodology.
In addition, the 5th edition of Headway retained the proven methodology of
the course and was supplemented with new texts, topics and digital
resources.
The textbook contains all the information about the language and skills
students need to improve their English, with grammar, vocabulary and skills
in each block. The new online practice is fully integrated with the course
materials, providing relevant and useful practice outside the classroom.
I think this is one of the best course books for learning English. Excellent
work of the authors. The textbook is perfectly structured, with a gradually
increasing level of complexity of tasks and active use of new words and
expressions.
