UNDERSTANDING WHAT IT IS & HOW IT

WORKS

ENERGY
SYLLABUS CHECK FOR “ENERGY” TOPIC

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW IN YEAR 1 IGCSE

▸ The different types of energy (theory only)

▸ Be able to explain how energy transforms and is

transferred (and wasted)

▸ CALCULATIONS for potential energy

▸ CALCULATIONS for kinetic energy

▸ CALCULATIONS for energy efficiency

▸ CALCULATIONS involving WORK DONE and POWER

UNIT 1.7 - THE CALCULATIONS PART

IGCSE OBJECTIVES:

Kinetic Energy (KE)

If you’re interested to find out how this formula was derived, ask me privately.
Or, go find out about the ‘SUVAT’ equations, and use that in the ‘Work’ formula we will cover
later.
Kinetic Energy (KE)
Gravitational Potential Energy (GPE)
Gravitational Potential Energy (GPE)
Kinetic Energy (KE) & Gravitational Potential Energy (GPE)
RELATE BACK TO CONSERVATION OF ENERGY;

OBSERVE THE TOTAL ENERGY (GREEN).

THE OTHER TWO ARE SWITCHING BACK AND FORTH.

In an ideal world (with no friction or air resistance, this will keep
going because energy cannot be destroyed/disappear. They just
change form…
WHEN AND WHERE TO USE THESE FORMULAE

RELATING BOTH EK & EP IN SOLVING MOTIONS PROBLEM

Challenge yourself - Falling Rock

halfway

Mass of rock = 1kg

Challenge yourself - Falling Rock

halfway Halfway in the fall:

assume that HALF the
Ep is used
Mass of rock = 1kg
Ek = 0.5 X 1kg X v2
Ep = mgh = 1kg X 10 x 3.0m 15 J = 0.5 X 1kg X v2
= 30 J

v =√(15J / (0.5 X 1kg)

= 5.48 m/s
Challenge yourself - Roller coaster
Mass of roller coaster: 100 kg

A) calculate the potential energy

Of the roller coaster b) half the speed = 14.15 m/s
Ep = mass x 10 x height Calculate the Ek
Ep = 100kg x 10 x 40m
= 40 000 J

Ep ==> Ek
Ep = Ek
40 000 = 0.5 x 100 x v^2
Challenge yourself - Roller coaster
Mass of roller coaster: 100 kg

a) Potential E = kinetic E
Half the speed at a)
mgh = 0.5mv^2
What height it will be 14.15 m/s
100kg x 10 x 40m = 0.5 x 100kg x v^2
mgh = 0.5mv^2
40 000 J = 50 x v^2
100 x 10 x h = 0.5 x 100 x (14.15)^2
40 000 J / 50 = v^2
1000h = 10 011
v^2 = 800
h = 10m
v = sqr root of 800 = 28.3 m/s
