3.4 New Product Development Process
The research and development (R&D) process for the Safety Bubbly Jacket involved a
comprehensive ideation stage, which included a literature review (LR) on current and
previous technologies used in similar safety products. This review provided insights into
advancements in sensor technology, materials, and protective mechanisms, which were
crucial for developing an innovative and effective safety jacket for individuals with
disabilities.
Initially, the literature review focused on traditional safety measures such as padded
clothing and passive fall protection devices. These conventional methods primarily rely on
cushioning materials that absorb impact upon falling but do not actively prevent injuries.
For example, traditional padded jackets and helmets provide a basic level of protection but
are often bulky and uncomfortable for prolonged use (Smith., Jones, & Brown, 2022).
In contrast, recent advancements in wearable technology and smart sensors have enabled
the development of more sophisticated safety devices. Modern safety solutions incorporate
accelerometers and gyroscopes to detect abnormal movements indicative of falls (Jones &
Brown, 2021). These sensors can trigger immediate protective responses, such as airbag
inflation, to cushion the impact and reduce the likelihood of injury. The Safety Bubbly
Jacket leverages this advanced technology by integrating high-precision sensors that detect
potential falls in real-time. Upon detecting a fall, the jacket deploys airbags to protect the
wearer from injury, a significant improvement over traditional passive protection methods
(Wang, Zhao, & Chen, 2023).
Specifically, the use of accelerometers and gyroscopes in the Safety Bubbly Jacket allows
for precise monitoring of the wearer's movements. When these sensors detect a sudden
acceleration or a change in orientation that is characteristic of a fall, they send a signal to
the airbag system. This system then inflates the airbags within milliseconds, providing a
cushioned barrier that absorbs the impact of the fall (Miller & Clark, 2021). This rapid
response is crucial in minimizing injury, especially for individuals with disabilities who
may have a higher risk of severe consequences from falls.
11
Additionally, the R&D process considered the use of lightweight and breathable materials
to enhance comfort and usability. Previous technologies often utilized heavy and restrictive
materials that limited mobility and deterred consistent use. By contrast, the Safety Bubbly
Jacket employs modern fabrics that are both durable and comfortable, addressing the
shortcomings of earlier designs (Kim & Lee, 2020). The integration of advanced materials
ensures that the jacket remains wearable for extended periods without causing discomfort,
thereby increasing the likelihood of regular use and providing continuous protection.
In conclusion, the R&D process for the Safety Bubbly Jacket was rooted in a thorough
literature review that compared current and previous safety technologies. This comparison
highlighted significant advancements in sensor technology, airbag systems, and materials,
which informed the development of a more effective and user-friendly safety jacket for
individuals with disabilities. By incorporating state-of-the-art sensors and
rapid-deployment airbags along with lightweight materials, the Safety Bubbly Jacket
represents a substantial innovation in the field of personal safety equipment.
